Sixth Form Enrolment

I have realised (too late) that I haven't given this as much thought as I should have! My daughter has applied for two sixth forms. She wants to carry on at the school she has already attended but she is border line likely to get the grades she needs. She has to enrol on 12th August but won't know if she has got a place until 13th. Can she enrol at both colleges and drop out of one when she has her results? What happens if she doesn't get a place? To add to my disorganisation- we are on holiday from the 13th for two weeks so it will be tricky to get something sorted. Now regretting being too laid back...

Keep place at both until you get the results. Even if they aren't what you were expecting or needed, talk to the school as they maybe amenable to her staying on as they know her capabilities. My sons school did as that as that is what he wanted. I then just rang the college to tell them he was staying on at 6th form.

Thank you so much for your reply. She has done the pre-enrolment tasks for both places. I'm just wondering whether to get her to enrol at both places on 12th August because she won't know for sure if she has places until the following day. If her results are good enough, I guess she'll just enrol at her sixth form. Do you know if she can enrol if her grades are slightly below the offer? Many thanks.

It will depend on the school as to whether they accept the results that are slightly lower. My son's school has a very small 6th form and on results day they chat to each child individually to set up their 6th form program. The maths teacher really convinced the head of 6th form he was better than the results he achieved (6 in maths) and they took him on a provisional basis (he is now predicted a C).
However, my friends son's school is more popular and will only accept certain grades.
Best of luck that all goes well on results day.

Enrol in both. Whether or not she gets in if she doesn't meet the entry requirements will depend on whether they are over subscribed or not. If they have places they will likely take her.

Thank you for your replies. You've put my mind at rest. I will get her to enrol at both places. Would we just phone to decline one of the places when we know what's what? I'm hoping that if they are oversubscribed she can change subjects. The school doesn't seem to be too open to discussing things and have asked us not to contact them during results week. I guess now we'll wait and see what happens. I appreciate your advice. Thank you.

Hang on. Have you got your dates right?
GCSE results are out on Thursday 12th.

GravityFalls · 20/07/2021 10:32

It’s not a big deal to accept a place then phone to decline it later - slightly annoying for the sixth form but it happens all the time. We have loads of changes and movement in the first couple of weeks then a smaller amount right up until half term. It’s no big deal.

Haskell · 20/07/2021 10:53

They won't be running enrolment before the results are out!
How would they know who meets the criteria for entry? Grin
On the day, results for many schools will be sent out electronically in the morning, so go down to her first choice at the correct time and enrol. (Assuming her grades meet their entrance)

rainbowsandcloudyskies · 21/07/2021 17:20

Enrolment is the same day (12th) as results are out for both sixth forms she has applied for. Places are confirmed on 13th. Hopefully I'll have got my head round this by the time my twins go in two years time!!!

Thanks for replying.

Enrolment is on results day, they go in with their results (or collect them from school depending on local arrangements) and either enroll or there's teachers on hand to guide them towards courses they are better suited to or to suggest a more vocational college

rainbowsandcloudyskies · 21/07/2021 17:30

I think this is the problem. Results are emailed. Enrolment is online. We have been told not to contact the school that week. We have had no guidance- just dates. I can see now that in normal times there would be more guidance which is probably why I am so confused!

Thank you everyone. You have made things clearer for me.

I’m glad you started this thread as I have similar questions regarding enrolment. My daughter has applied to her own school 6th form, 2 other schools and a sixth form college. One of the other schools is her first choice but they require a grade 6 in Maths which she might struggle to get. Her option choices are English, History and Drama for which she is predicted good grades (7 and above.) If her maths grade is a 5 she would want to enrol anyway as they have a waiting list procedure but it’s online and open until 27th August so not sure when we would hear wether she has been accepted or is on a waiting list etc. In that situation would she also enrol at one of her other choices ( all requiring a grade 5 or even a 4 in Maths) until she hears from her first choice? It’s all very confusing and as it’s all done online you can’t discuss anything with anyone! And it all has to be done on 12th on the same day as results. One school has already said it’s a first come first served system if courses are oversubscribed. Seems the best thing to do is hedge your bets and enrol everywhere to cover all options until you have a confirmed place but is this allowed?

Argh, we are dealing with this as well. In a muddle here. DC didn't quite get the grades for school sixth form (five 6s, he got a mix of 7,8 and 6 and 5s!) and they called this afternoon but he was at his work.

Really hoping they have not missed the chance of an offer now. Sad as it may have been 'first come first served'

So does it tend to be finalised on the day after results then? I just thought he might be able to speak with them on Monday.

Orangesandlemons77 · 16/08/2021 11:49

School have told us our DC needs to appeal which will go to head of sixth and governors. To hold on to other offers. Sad such a lot of stress. Not sure when this will happen either.
