Can you do an access to higher education course and an A level?

Hi there!

I left school after my GCSEs with good grades but being a cocky team thought I knew everything and didn't do my A levels.

I'm now nearly 29 and want to set myself on the path to go to university. I've been looking at access courses but the course I want to study at Uni requires a subject not included in the access to higher education diploma.

So if I was to do an access to higher education course with the local college in social sciences (it includes sociology, English literature and psychology) could I also do an A level in history to give me the subjects I need for the Uni course.

I want to study history or history with sociology. I would be looking at starting the A level soon and the access course in September.

I could do 3 levels with the open University in theory but I am the type of person who benefits from a classroom environment and face to face teaching so think I would struggle to do all 3 with no face to face time

It would depend on the college but not usually - an access to HE diploma is considered a full course load. However, I’d say there’s probably an access course that will get you onto that degree course without an extra a level as well. Speak to the admissions department at the university/ies that you’re interested in.
