Teenager Year 11 frustration

Never used a forum before but I’m just at the end of my tether. Our 15 yo son, who is bright and very switched on, refuses to do anything education related including homework, studying for forthcoming GCSEs, applying for colleges or apprenticeships or even discussing anything related to school. He believes school does not teach him anything that will be useful in his future and he is adamant that he is going to be a huge success in the world of the financial market without his grades. He will study the stock market for hours and hours, but won’t put in the same effort at school. He comes from a loving and supportive family and we really do have his best interests at heart. Myself and husband are tearing our hair out with worry over his future, and wondered if we alone or are there other teenagers of the same mindset.

I’m not able to help, but to get more responses you might be better asking in the Secondary Education or Teenager categories. They both get more use by parents in your child’s age bracket.
Good luck

Has he actually looked into the 'big swinging dicks' - as top traders are known. Now days pretty much all of them have excellent STEM degrees and often masters degrees.
I have three friends from Uni who fall into this category now VPs at various banks all three of them have at least 2:1 in their BSc and then a masters degree from Imperial.
Banks want people who have proven analytical skills, excellent maths skills( able to run the numbers in their heads) and people who they know will pass the trading exams.
I found this that details what you need.

That’s a really useful link, thank you! I’ve tried talking to him about financial courses that would be useful, and yet he STILL doesn’t believe he needs them. He’s been studying trading online for quite some time and although he does seem to have a really extensive knowledge about it, I guess I’m old-school and think getting a good education will really help him achieve his dream, plus help with a back up plan in case it all falls apart. He’s sadly fallen hook line and sinker for all the case studies of young kids who have struck it rich in the world of FOREX with absolutely no qualifications. He buys endless ‘motivational’ books on how to be rich and successful without school! Thanks again for that link, I’ll sit him down with it and see if it gives him a different perspective

The ones who claim to be rich are just there to sell their courses and books. If they are rich due to trading, they wouldn’t want to sell their secret to a potential rival.

Let him trade on a practice platform and see if he can make any long term profit :)
