Does anyone know whether there are any dispensations for level 3 C&G in Catering and Hospitality practical assessments.

If you mean adjustments for disabilities these should be available via City and Guilds. These are usually known as access arrangements and have to be applied for in advance.

I had an email from DS' tutor stating that because he was doing a level 3 there were no dispensations in the practical assessments, meaning that he wouldn't get extra time, but he could still have extra support in the theory.

I know they are called access arrangements and that eligibility is usually determined by the SEND department.

I feel I may be being fobbed off

What does he need the extra time for?

"Dispensation" is not a useful way to think about it. With a registered (assessed) disability, education settings need to make access arrangements, but assessments still have to be undertaken, and the access arrangements need to enable the content/skills learned to be successfully demonstrated & assessed.

OP I have 15 years experience supporting pupils with access arrangements in schools and there is no extra time for practical assessments e.g. Art, cookery etc. This includes GCSE and vocational qualifications.
Extra time is for written exams only.
If you don't believe posters on this forum or the course tutor, then you need to check with City and guilds.
There will be adjustments for pupils for physical disabilities e.g. making sure work surfaces and cooking equipment are accessible for wheelchair users. I thought this may have been the sort of adjustment that you meant.

@Anotheronetwo DS has Autism and Specific Learning Disabilities.

@MissMarplesGloves Dispensations was the word used in the email and yes I agree that its not a useful way to think about it. DS qualifies for 25% extra time and has had 25% extra time in both the level 1 and level 2 courses for theory and practical.

Has anything changed OP i.e. is he taking level 3 at a different college to where he did level 1and 2?
Possibilities:

  1. it's possible to lose extra time if you don't use it. So if your ds didn't actually use it in level 2, it may be assumed he no longer needs it.
  2. The regulations do change year on year, so it's possible the college are correct and he no longer qualifies.
  3. The college may not have done the admin properly for this course and the application may have been rejected.
Does the college have a SENCO? I would appeal to them for assistance with this issue.

Same college, same tutors, he did utilise it during both courses. During a phone conversation with this particular tutor he said something that was at odds with what he put in the email, hence feeling fobbed off.

DS has had numerous problems with the college wrt EHCP provision and has been on a downward spiral for a couple of weeks and the tutors have not been especially helpful.

I think that DS has done amazingly well so far considering that primary education was a total failure which necessitated a move to specialist education but we all thought that he could do this. Coming back to mainstream education has been an eye opener after so long out of it.

@catndogslife just to pick up on what you wrote further up the thread. You wrote that extra time is for written exams only and there is no extra time for practical assessments.

Access arrangements can be made for technical assessments. For synoptic assessments extra time can be applied to timed assessments but a practical assistant is not allowed.
