Are these okay for a potential oxbridge applicant / top uni applicant ? ( think LSE, Cam, Kings etc) for Law.
: History, English Literature and Economics + a Law based EPQ ?
I posted in the wrong forum before...

I am not aware that Law courses require any particular prerequisite subjects but each university will have specific advice on their course information pages. The applicant is going to have to investigate suitable courses anyway, so best to get your information direct from the 'horse's mouth' so to speak.

Essay subjects are obviously going to be of benefit and if there is an opportunity to study Latin, that would be a very practical ALevel to have for Law. Does the applicant's school do the Bar Mock Trials (smartlaw.org.uk/mock-trials/bar-mock-trials-teachers-2/) ?
MUN? Debating (although this would be really for someone interested in the Bar as opposed to general solicitor-type work).

My DN who is in her final year of a Law degree was on a youth court panel during 6th Form - they heard cases and acted as magistrates for the local court - forget the name of the programme (sorry) but I imagine it had an impact on her UCAS personal statement and interview.

Good luck!

Seriously you do not need Latin at all to study Law!! The odd Latin phrase that still gets thrown in is always given in English too. Do not waste an A level on Latin unless you have a specific yearning to do it.

Essay subjects are good but so are sciences. Indeed you could even do a science degree and then Law conversion if that is what floats your boat. The most important thing is to get decent grades as in 3 x A if you want to consider a career as a solicitor or barrister in London or any decent regional.

My DD has just started a levels, wanting to do law and she has chosen history, economics and sociology.

Any subjects are great for Law, except maybe Law!

The most popular subject offered at Oxford for those studying Law is History. English Literature, Maths and Languages are useful too. Anything academic.

All subjects are not great. Law training contracts are hugely competitive. Candidates really will not get anywhere much with Media Studies, Art and PE for A levels. Law A level is not considered useful. Getting onto a Law degree is one thing, actually getting a training contract or a pupillage is something very different.

If you do a first degree in something else, and then convert to law, that subject needs to be considered academic too. Again Media, Sociology or even Criminology might not be good enough for a training contract after conversion. UIniversity matters to. The higher ranked the better.

Hi, I am a careers adviser/coach. I would always advice my students when considering law to choose a wide range of subjects that you are good at (you'll enjoy them and do well!) You need to consider that there are different types of law, so if your DC is wanting to do criminal law an alevelnin psychology maybe more use. If it business law then economics is a good shout. Remember only 20% of law graduates actually take up a career in law so having other interests is well worth it. Finally the Law Society has some great advice too. Xx
