all A Levels created equally

So just some thoughts on A'Level choices, are they all created equally?

My DS is looking at either English Language, History and Politics and now has been advised to study History, Politics and Law. First thought on this, are they worth anything at Uni and where could you go with this?

The other issue with History, Politics and law is that it is very narrow. Massive early specialisation even for England - Politics and law are closely related (politicians make laws, including about how laws are made) and although the recent challenges to the constitutional conventions and parliamentary sovereignty arising from Brexit are interesting from a technical perspective I doubt they would fit into the A-level syllabus...

Maths, FM and Physics is probably similarly narrow, students were generally encouraged to do a 4th to broaden things up. Workload (and presumably option space) would probably preclude a 4th with 3 essay and fact heavy subjects!

No university is going to like you less because you did law A-level. However, it's unlikely than any university is going to like you more for having done it (even for a law degree). Only take it if you're interested in studying it (I would advise that for any a-level though!)

Instead of listening to this sea of conflicting and sometimes outdated advice, check out some actual university websites and look for the entry requirements. Alternatively, use the Russell Group's "informed choices" web app, which really helps.
