Holidays while in 6th form?

I’m just wondering if you have to follow the same rules re requesting holidays when you have a child in 6th form, than you do in the rest of secondary school?

Terms are shorter, so it is easier to take holidays out of traditional school holiday periods. There are coursework deadlines to meet which tend not to be known well in advance. My DD's 6th form allowed 3 days off for open days and time off for university interviews. Anything else would have been heavily frowned upon.

You won't be fined or anything but holidays are not approved and won't be authorised. Obviously they can't actually stop you but as a sixth form college teacher I make no allowances for students who have missed lessons for holidays - I might point them towards the lesson resources on Teams etc but I won't go over anything and they won't get any leeway on deadlines.

Thanks. I think I’ll do it once a year for a week, trying to get as many of those days out of term as possible.

Also - would they WANT to go on holiday with you in term time? Often sixth formers are very sheepish about having to admit it’s a family holiday, and would prefer not to miss lessons.

When I was at 6th form we were told if we took holiday in term time we would not be allowed back!

If it's in the autumn term then it could make their attendance percentage very low and they could be asked to leave.

Sixth Form is so short and so important why would you choose to miss such a vital time in their education voluntarily?

leafeater · 12/07/2020 15:20

My dd has a % attendance she has to meet and if they fall below it, they get kicked out. So probably not worth missing days!

Terms are shorter Confused

All 3 of my dcs' terms were exactly the same in 6th form as in Yrs R through to 11.
I definitely would not take them out during school term in the 6th form.
Many dc who cruised through school to Yr11, then find A-levels incredibly difficult. Obviously you can't help missing a day or two if you are ill, but I really wouldn't take time out other than once or twice for University open days, and possibly a couple of hours for a driving test. Definitely wouldn't plan a holiday.

Our Sixth Form was due to break up on 9 July, whereas our local schools were due to break up on 23 July. Autumn term kicks off again on 3 September in schools, but 7 September for sixth form. That's plenty of extra time for a holiday.

At our state school y12 finishes on the same date as y7 to y10.

Modular course with high assessed class work content. We were clearly told that the only reason for absence from college would be auditions in year 2.

Are you mad? You can’t take kids out if school just got a holiday whilst they’re doing A levels...they only get the one opportunity per lifetime.
Go during the holidays (or skip a year). A levels are usually finished by end of June in year 13.
