Homeschooling 16+

DS 16 really really not keen on going to any college or 6th form when the new school year starts as they had a number of issues at school last term.

Looking for recommendations on how best to home school for next couple of years - bit daunted by the prospect to be honest.... any resources etc, help or advice you could give would be greatly received Smile

Thank you

What does your son want to do? If he still wants to do A levels you could look at Wolsey Hall or the National Extension College for online/distance learning courses.

Or go to a sixth form college further away ? My ds didn't like his secondary school so he went to a sixth form college further away where there weren't any from his old school. He has been much happier this year - such a shame lockdown happened.

Can you afford online schooling at around £3-4k a year? If so, have a look at Interhigh or Myonlineschooling as a starting point.

I've just arranged a tutor for DD. This is just to support her studies alongside sixth form (which has been poor during Covid) But I noticed that the tutor she used also offers the be the sole teacher of kids taking them through Alevels. She charges a slightly higher rate for this. I found her though one of the big tutor agencies.

For all subjects?

Btw, if you are receiving Child Benefit, this is not paid post-16 if the home education starts at that point (I appreciate that the OP might well not be, but to some families, c.£84 a month would be quite a big deal).

Does he want to continue in education? 16 year ikds are still able to work if they can find a job.

What are his long term plans? Does he want to go to uni?

Firefliess · 24/06/2020 15:40

@marchingfrogs No certainly not all subjects. She offers psychology and sociology. I imagine you'd need more than one tutor if you wanted to do three Alevels that way.

Does he really want to be continuing with formal education or does he feel he is 'done' with that part of life. Does he have any clue what he wants to 'do' with his life? If you are in England the must-stay-in-education is actually false. They don't have to. It's Education or Training. Training could be an official apprenticeship or he can have a part time job and do a part time college course. However if the part time job turned into a full time job and he dropped the college course no one actually cares - you wouldn't receive a fine or anything. Infact if he just had a part time job and didn't bother with college no one would care. The only issue with that is wages for 16 year olds area low and her wouldn't be entitled to any benefits so you would have to be supporting him still.
What does he want to 'do' is the first thing he needs to figure out before he can decide his path.

I would look at a different sixth form or FE college tbh. Homeschooling is going to be tough at A level unless you're a teacher yourself.

What does your DS have in mind long term?
