Zero Gravity Mentoring into uni

Hi all

My step-son goes to a 'needs improvement' school but surprised us all by doing very well in his GCSEs. Now in year 12 his teacher has told him to signup for Zero Gravity mentoring because it's free and the mentors are from Oxbridge and help you get in.

Has anyone had experience of this- there doesn't seem to be much online as they just rebranded from access Oxbridge. I want to know whether an hour a week is a good time investment on his part or whether he should spend the time studying normal stuff?

Have you read everything available on Access Oxbridge?

www.zerogravity.co.uk/ They come up under the new name when googled.

Pretty much everything I've read about them over the past few years has been positive: their methods are straightforward and their achievements impressive. I'm a long ago Oxbridge graduate and know there's no secret handshake, it really is a matter of doing more of the stuff that a good education (state or independent, at school and at home) provides.

I want to know whether an hour a week is a good time investment on his part or whether he should spend the time studying normal stuff?

Now ... Whose 'normal stuff' do you mean? The point of Zero Gravity, as I understand it, is to make what is already normal in the best archiving schools - wide reading, intellectual challenge, etc, etc, available to all students. If he's interested in applying to Oxbridge he should be doing everything he can and taking up every opportunity offered.

(Hmm 'best achieving schools ...')

My dd has been offered mentoring too but we've not heard of the Zero Gravity naming. She's not targeting Oxbridge but the mentoring is for kids interested in other top uni like Russell Group too. We've not heard anything yet but hopefully someone in the know will reply

Thanks all for the feedback!

@PerditaProvokesEnmity that´s very good to hear from someone who has been there! I will encourage him to sign up

@flamingochill I misunderstood when I first looked them up, thought it was oxford and cambridge only but you are right it is russell group too which is good because his teacher wants him to look at Durham and LSE too! Good luck to your dd
