Hi, does anyone have kids who attend uni of Sussex? It's on my daughters list of possible unis and wondered what people think?

Yes !! Absolutely bloody fantastic. My DS did a Psychology degree there and got a first class with honours.

Got straight in to Cambridge (Kings) on the back of that for Post grad..

.. and back to sussex for PHD as has one of the WORLDS BEST research programmes..

Hard but not impossible to get into though. Needed AAB in strong academic subjects. (My DS did Maths , FMaths and Psychology. )

Cannot recommend it highly enough. Fab campus with Brighton on doorstep for 2nd year. He loved it.

Had job part time in chosen profession . Helped by Uni placement. Careers people are proactive and well placed.

Very student centred nowadays, good rep, very liberal. On a steep hill Grin.

Not as difficult to get into as Oxbridge or Durham and not particularly prestigious. Of course some students will do exceptionally well and others won’t get jobs at all.

It’s largely upper mid division in the league tables and it’s not in the Russell Group. None of this matters if your grades match their requirements and you like the idea of being just outside Brighton. I could think of worse places to be.

What does DC want to study and what grades might they aspire to? That drives choices too.

Thanks all for replies, DS has already got the grades and has offers from a few unis including Sussex. We live in North Yorkshire, we wondered if DS might feel out of place at a uni that probably draws a lot of students from the South?

My advice is to look at the social media pages for the Uni for her particular course, or ask on the Student Room or speak to the programme leader. the course she is doing may make a difference.

Sussex has an International intake. Brighton itself has a rep for being very 'London by the sea'. I personally think it is a diverse and welcoming town.

What do you imagine the differences are between a student from the south and one from the north?

Mintchockchip · 04/06/2020 12:08

Haha, I know, none at all, I'm overthinking it! I love the idea of Brighton too.

A few years ago now but I did my undergraduate degree there and absolutely loved it. I had fun in Brighton but studied hard too and have had a successful career since graduating from there.

I'd love to live up North , but I love the weather on the South Coast too much .

No one from another part of this small country should be worried about going to university anywhere here. I suspect the good people of Brighton have come across people from Yorkshire before! Go for it if it’s somewhere near the best for the course!
