Has anyone's dc done this scheme?
Did they have to live away from home?
Thanks.

My DD has applied for the scheme this year and has a telephone interview next week. You can state where you would like to be placed and DD wants to stay within commuting distance of home. You do of course restrict your options by asking for this though.

Ds had his interview a couple of weeks ago. We told him to say he'd go anywhere. Possibly regretting that now.
Good luck to your dd next week.

Thanks. I suppose it depends on what he's offered. He may find a relatively inexpensive house share if he's in a student city?
I know one of the reasons for DD taking a gap year is that she doesn't feel quite ready to leave home (year of bad health) but does want to go away when she goes to university.
What sort of things did they ask in the interview if you don't mind me asking?

He's not the most communicative teenage boy, but from what I've pressed out of him, they just asked what sort of work he's interested in and where he would be prepared to go. Not much help to you I know. Sorry! I hope your dd can get something.

Thank you so much and good luck to your son.

Any news from anyone? DS has an interview next week for a job. I don't know how many jobs will be out there now….

In light of the Coronavirus situation, DD decided to make a late UCAS application instead and has accepted an offer to study MORSE at Lancaster. I'm just delighted she has something to do in September! Good luck to your DS.

Do you mean between school and uni, or as part of a uni course (usually between the 2nd and 3rd years)?

The latter is quite popular and has a good reputation amongst employers for providing graduates with valuable work skills before they start.

DS is due to start one in Sept - in a different town to both uni and home (which was his choice). A friend of his is starting one close to home and moving back for a year to save money.

Competition for the best ones is quite fierce though, and the students in 2nd year need to get active at the start of term - websites like LinkedIn and GlassDoor (and various graduate job sites) are useful sources.

It's a gap year before uni. So then he can apply for uni with grades in the bag and a years worth of experience. And some money in the bank too!
