My daughter has always wanted to be a nurse. She has found education hard but ploughed her way through. She has achieved 8 GCSE from 4-7 including maths, English and sciences.
We didn't want to burden her with three A levels so she is doing two and has a chance of two B's or higher. She is also doing an EPQ which she should get an A in (on relevant subject area)
Her problem is now that she is about 15-20 Ukas points short.
She is a July baby and wants to be a military nurse - she won't get in on those results
Does anyone have any idea how to mop up the extra 20 points in the next year after she finishes her A levels (would rather it took only a year)
Thank you
❤️

Don't know what the requirements are ...you need to check what counts as for some courses it's relevant activity not points that matter more...
But if they are points in anything, did she ever do any music or danced exams?

Paddy1234 · 07/12/2019 17:17

No she doesn't qualify for any other points - which is gutting

There are one year HealthCare Foundation Years for some degrees which guarantee a place on relevant degree courses on completion.
You apply via UCAS.

This is the course I have been looking at but there are others available.

It’s a bit late in the year to start any additional courses so she could do an extra year at Sixth Form and sit either 2 new AS levels or equivalent (eg Core Maths) or if the school is able/willing sit Year 12 and Y13 of a BTEC subject at the same time.

You will need to look carefully at university entry requirements as some will require all qualifications to be sat at the same point.

She would probably have been better off doing a Btec extended diploma in a healthcare related subject. Some schools and colleges also offer the Btec certificates. Could she do one of those?

Most universities offering nursing degrees also offer foundation courses - so a year foundation prior to her nursing degree. Do the military do direct entry nursing still? I know it was being phased out decades ago.

You can still train as a nurse with the Army, through Birmingham City University- the requirement is 120 UCAS points, though, which is not possible with just two A levels, even with a top grade EPQ. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but a bit of research prior to embarking on a less than standard (academic) post 16 course would have been sensible. Remember, as a student nurse, she will have to be able to cope with the academic side of the training, whilst undertaking placements.

We also train our own nurses. You will complete a 3 year degree programme that will give you professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. You will be well supported by military and civilian University staff at the Defence School of Healthcare Education within Birmingham City University

A bit of a long shot but does she play any instruments or sing? Grade 6 and above get UCAS points. It starts at 8 points i think (for a pass).

Hi Paddy.
One way to get UCAS points (same number as EPQ) is to take Core maths. It is a Level 3 qualification, recognised by and liked by universities and particularly relevant for supporting careers in health and social sciences etc.. She can do it in a year and the entry requirements are just a 4 at GCSE in maths. It is not like A level or AS maths 80% of the content comes from GCSE and it is based aroudn real life and problem solving.
