Sending kids to Cambridge, need some advice from fellow parents who've done the same!

Hi Mumsnetters,

I live in Newcastle, but am about to send my oldest off to Cambridge and was wondering for some advice from parents who have done the same, specifically to Cambridge. Where to stay, what to do, what things there are to do in the town? Has anyone here done the same (specifically to Cambridge)?

I would be so grateful if someone was able to help me out Smile

Where to stay? Sorry do you mean they are going for an interview?

You aren't sending them anywhere, they are going.

00100001 · 20/11/2019 11:44

why are you sending them to Cambridge? how long will they be there?
How old are they?

Trewser · 20/11/2019 11:44

Are you writing something about it?

HavelockVetinari · 20/11/2019 11:45

If he or she is going for an interview then they can get overnight accommodation in halls usually for the night before - the interviews are usually when most students have gone down for Christmas.

If there's time post-interview I'd suggest just having a wander around town and taking in the atmosphere. Which college is it?

If you are about to send your dc off to university in Cambridge they are a bit late. Term started about 6 weeks ago.

AlexaShutUp · 20/11/2019 11:51

Yes, if they're going for an interview (though it's a little early for this?) they should get accommodation provided. Or do you just want to send them to have a look around?

As far as stuff to do is concerned, I'd be inclined to leave them to it. It isn't a particularly big city so they'll manage to find their way around quite easily, I reckon.

MarchingFrogs · 20/11/2019 17:45

Has anyone here done the same?

Not just randomly sent any of them off on a 200+ mile journey to somewhere, with no particular aim, no.

Assuming this isn't a wind-up, what kind of thing does your DC enjoy doing?

And I know the young folk of Newcastle are renowned for not feeling the need of a coat, whatever the season, but s/he might want to rethink that one one when it comes to Cambridge at this time of year.

Nursing83 · 20/11/2019 17:50

What sort of budget? Is it a holiday or an interview for college next year? How long are they staying? If it's an interview the college normally organise accommodation

I am also from Newcastle.

We stayed at a premier inn.
Went on a boat.
Ate sushi.

Hope this helps.

Have a look on the Higher Education Oxbridge (5) thread.

Signing in for the OP’s explanation ...

neighbourhoodarthur if you mean the university - your child really should be able to work all this out for themselves.

Also, about half of MN consists of Oxbridge alumnae, all of whose children also go, and about a fifth of Mumsnetters are currently either employed by or engaged in research at one of the two places. So mild stealth boasting is utterly wasted on us. Halloween Grin
