Help - sixth form uniform rules

justfortoday4367 · 19/09/2019 17:14

Can any help with where they brought there daughters sixth form clothes from? We are struggling with the rules knee length not Lycra type material. Tried standard next etc but she is a size 0 occasionally a 4 might fit. the skirts she has apparently aren’t suitable. When I look at the H&M etc sites I think the length will be too short (she has a 32 leg )

would this in black work?

ArsenicChip · 19/09/2019 17:29

It depends how much money you want to spend and what exactly the rules are. Is it business dress?

LIZS · 19/09/2019 17:30

H and m are usually fine and do different lengths instore. Dp might be worth a look too.

justfortoday4367 · 19/09/2019 17:34

@sleepismysuperpower1 I’ve just sent her that and she said eewww I think it maybe the only option!

Yes it’s business dress - I’ll spend anything so she’ll at least go in. She’s feeling like she made the wrong option - she’s never been in trouble ever and the issues with her skirt is making her feel like she is in trouble 🙄

How about trousers?

justfortoday4367 · 19/09/2019 18:01

Yep we’ve ordered trousers hopefully they fit !!! As much as she is blessed with a size 0 waist she is a dancer so doesn’t have the thinnest of thighs (still tiny) so in turn we struggle to get the tiny waist over her legs!

Honestly she looks smart so I struggle to see the issue :( but rules are rules!

Uniqlo are usually good for work-wear in small sizes. And lots of their cloths come up long as they can alter them in-house, so they can be good for beanpoles.

Theovertoad · 20/09/2019 00:48

Dd generally wears trousers just to avoid the whole skirt length thing. I did get her one skirt from Top shop which is near the knee. I haven’t seen it make it out of the wardrobe yet

Tobeshared · 20/09/2019 09:19

Mango have suits in very small sizes - skirts are knee length too.

ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave · 20/09/2019 11:23

Does it have to be separates. Lots of very nice dresses about, and tend to be longer. Look nice with boots. I would say that is business smart, but it depends on the school and what your DD likes.

Tobeshared · 20/09/2019 12:04

@ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave At our school boots are not considered smart enough and if you want to wear a dress you need to have a matching jacket. Very silly, stricter than any workplace - teachers dress down and look rather scruffy but the sixth formers have to look like they are about to attend an interview.

Lara53 · 20/09/2019 15:27

My friends DD is a size 4 and they’ve bought quite a few things from Brandy Melville for 6th form

pikapikachu · 20/09/2019 15:38

Dd sometimes orders New Look teens range (age 11-15) but generally buys from ASOS. Are you looking in the tall ranges for extra length? My DD's school doesn't have a length or stretchiness rule so unfortunately can't help with specific skirts or dresses.

pikapikachu · 20/09/2019 15:42

Had a quick look on ASOS and there's lots of knee length pencil skirts. Knee length on a model so assuming that your dd is model height then should be fine.

justfortoday4367 · 20/09/2019 16:04

We had a couple of pencil skirts - apparently material isn’t right! But I’m sending the ASOS link to HOY to check!!

She has a couple of skirts from brandy - length is the issue! But will check again to see if the autumn/winter choices are a little longer.

I went into New look today and ordered a skirt from the petit range. They tried to help in store but nothing went smaller enough! And only one skirt was suitable! Hoping length will be ok 🤞🏻

I’ve ordered a couple from H&M and trousers- hoping they fit!!

Thanks all!

Sounds OTT. Remember my dds had to do this but nowhere near as strict

Collision · 20/09/2019 16:12

How ridiculous

Ds can wear anything for 6th form.

Fortunately he’s got good taste and always looks good.

JudgeRindersMinder · 20/09/2019 16:13

Why does no one question these ridiculous rules about “business dress” as much as anything this kind of clothing costs a lot more than school uniform and it’s grossly unfair in the parents/carers. They are school pupils, with a school pupil’s income-generally very low or zero-who on earth decides that they should be wearing “business dress”
I’m in Scotland and we have none of this rubbish here, you wear uniform till the age of 17/18 -depending on what point you leave school, and that’s it.

I shake my head when I read some of the stories on here about school uniform policies in England

justfortoday4367 · 20/09/2019 17:21

It seems that this year they have upped the rules!! I don’t really understand why, a fair few parents have complained! It’s a good school just seems to have very strict uniform rules - which I happy to follow just wished that they had been more clearer with them!!

She looks smart and tidy - her skirt I don’t feel is too short - as her parent don’t see anything wrong! It’s more frustrating due to her narrow waist and has been more difficult!

Not all schools require business dress. Ds went to a school where no jacket and tie was seen as too casual. Dd goes to one where they will call out ripped jeans, big logos, trainers and cropped tops but pretty much everything else is fine.

pointythings · 20/09/2019 21:35

This just makes me grateful that our local 6th form has no uniform.

Tobeshared · 21/09/2019 11:28

Why does no one question these ridiculous rules about “business dress” No point - it was presented as a "take it or leave it" and all the sixth forms in our town have agreed to exactly the same OTT business dress (I would suggest it goes beyond normal business dress) rules. Voting with our feet would mean our dcs have to be driven or spend an hour commuting on public transport each way to school in the next town - it doesn't seem worth it...so we comply through gritted teeth!

ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave · 21/09/2019 11:54

I would suggest it goes beyond normal business dress

Well exactly. Thankfully DD is at a 6th (within her school) that is pretty relaxed, they just have to be "decent". I just think it is so old fashioned/outdated to insist on a business dress code that just doesn't exist in the real world anymore. Many companies, especially in the new industries, now are completely relaxed dress, those that aren't have casual smart, and often dress down Friday. DH only wears a suit if he happens to have a meeting with clients, and even then half of them advise that they have a no suit rule.

Things are changing, shame the 6th Forms don't recognise that.

Tobeshared · 21/09/2019 13:19

I just think it is so old fashioned/outdated The school boasts about being old fashioned, I believe they think it symbolises quality, 😂 - it's a weird thing to boast about being behind the times...jumping on every trend is a bit daft too but surely there's a happy medium? Anyway we're stuck - it would be ridiculous to travel 20 miles a day just to avoid wearing a suit...so we just have to suck it up.
