dont
Ds did a btec. It was a brilliant course.. the modules were so interesting. He’s now at uni. If they already have a passion, it is a great path.
bobbins
Ds has Sen and when he moved up to college and had a few admin issues ( even though support was in place ) .I left it for a bit and then when I got in touch , I wished I hadn’t worried because they were really eager to have regular contact and chat about the best way to support him. I would definitely step in to clarify things ..if only so that your dc has slightly less to be dealing with.

Poppins not bobbins
😁🙄

Theovertoad · 18/09/2019 15:32

Hope your dd is ok Roz

Uni open days already? I asked ds if he was aware of any of his college mates going or planning to but he said not. Have to say I thought you did those in early Y13 if you weren't looking at Oxbridge, and if you are go in the summer of Y12 so you can get the application in by the earlier deadline.

Saucery · 18/09/2019 17:32

I’d just rather spread them out, berlinbabylon and build a weekend away round some of them . DS is interested in quite a few and I don’t want to be tied to too many visits in Yr13. He has a spreadsheet and everything, so I’m leaving it up to him to say where he wants to look at in good time Grin.
I know some students wouldn’t mind going somewhere they hadn’t been before (I didn’t) but DS would rather have a look round.

MaddieElla · 18/09/2019 18:37

No way my DD would wait until early in Year 13, just a few weeks before applying.

Plus she wants to see at least 6 so makes sense to visit a couple now then some more next Summer.

She's wanting to do medicine though so has the UCAT to complete in the summer, so she needs to have reduced her choices before Year 13

D0ubleTheJoy · 18/09/2019 22:47

We've already started going to university open days too. Having 2 going through it all at the same time, I definitely don't want to wait until next summer before starting the process.

They're not interested in the same courses, but there's a little bit of overlap in the universities they're considering. But only if they don't end up at the same place of course!

There's been a bit of shuffling of students and courses, DS1 slightly regretting FM (he's not enjoying statistics). They're both a little shocked by the volume of work already.

Hope the hand will heal quickly, how about using a tablet to make notes? It's not as easy using your non-dominant hand to swipe/type, but just about do-able.

Hope your daughter is feeling better too Roz.

Uni open days!???
(Goes to find cave to hide in)
Grin

ROZ12 · 19/09/2019 00:21

Thanks all yes she is better just all a bit overwhelming.

Foslady · 19/09/2019 04:42

I hadn’t realised that we were supposed to be going this early......dd will be only the second in our family to go - her cousin was the first but we only really heated about her applying to UCAS, not all the visits, I was thinking after Christmas.......

Foslady · 19/09/2019 04:43

Heated? Heard ......!

Hoooo · 19/09/2019 06:14

I was thinking year 13....ooops!

berlinbabylon · 19/09/2019 08:22

Me too Hoooo. It took long enough for ds to decide which 6th form college and which A levels?

Hoooo · 19/09/2019 08:28

I'll wait til next year to have that conversation :)

berlinbabylon · 19/09/2019 08:37

DS has no clue what he wants to do at the moment - could be something related to languages/history/international relations given his A levels. He has quite a niche sport, and if he wanted to continue with that there would be a limited number of cities he could live in for coaching. Excluding London, he'd probably be looking at Leeds, Leicester, Warwick and Cardiff and maybe somewhere relatively local as a 5th choice that he could get home once a week to train with his own coach. Those cities have RG and ex-poly universities so there would be a wide range of courses open to him once he knows what he would like to do, I don't think he'd be restricting his options too much unless he decided he wanted to do a very niche course.

I'll be meeting his personal tutor for the first time next week so I will ask her about timings for open days.

Saucery · 19/09/2019 09:33

Ah, that could explain it. DS has 2 STEM type courses/ careers in mind and his choices are traditional ones for those subjects. Wise for your DS to start early with a broad range if he needs to do a lot more narrowing down before choice time.

Hoooo · 19/09/2019 10:21

Oh!
Ds1s old school have just rang...they are putting one of his history papers in for a remark ashe was 1 mark off an 8.
I knew it was close looking at the grade boundaries but for 1 mark it's worth a punt, right?

Hoooo · 19/09/2019 10:24

Ds is the same berlin!
(Leicester is my neck of the woods:)

To stay on at the uni attached to his 6th form to do history he'd need ABB.

berlinbabylon · 19/09/2019 10:31

Yes I think for one mark it's worth a go. History was the one subject we got marks for with the results and ds was the opposite, just one mark above the grade boundary for an 8! He got a 9 in his mock but thinks he messed up one of the June papers because he hadn't slept well the night before. We are waiting to hear about his Eng lang remark.

Foslady · 19/09/2019 10:31

Definitely @Hoooo, dd picked up two marks in biology and went up a grade (must remember to ask how I get my refund.........!)

Hoooo · 19/09/2019 10:45

School are paying apparently?

I know ds was disappointed with the 7 🙄..history and geography are his "thing" and he got an 8 in geography:)

He thinks he messed up the 16 marker on paper 2.

Hoooo · 19/09/2019 10:46

He isn't in danger of going down grade hopefully!

Arewedone · 19/09/2019 11:15

Definitely worth it @Hoooo

Hoooo · 19/09/2019 12:55

Do you know how long it takes?

Arewedone · 19/09/2019 15:06

@Hoooo I paid for express ( Edexcel) which took 3 days. If the school is paying I think it’s 2 weeks.
