Can I get a Level 2 English Certificate without doing a course?

If my English is already at level 2?

I will be asking the college on Tuesday obviously, but I need to apply for a job before then as its closing and I want an idea before I mention it in the application.

Last year I was doing a GCSE English course. At the beginning when we were assessed I was told that my English was already at level 2 and the woman said this would be enough for some employers and asked if I definitely wanted to do the GCSE. I wanted to get the GCSE but unfortunately I wasn't able to complete the course because of sudden work commitments.

I'm just wondering if it's a thing to just complete this test again and get a level 2 certificate? Or would I need to take a course? I have been googling but can't get an answer.

Thank you :)

I think it sounds like you did a level 2 assessment with the tutor so she could identify the ability of the group- unfortunately that isn't the same as being entered for and externally assessed for the qualification. BUT I imagine you'd be able to find a college willing to enter you for a functional skills assessment next time they sit one, if you're willing to pay the registration and exam costs. It sounds like you would pass it no problem.

At this exact moment in time you don't have a level 2 qualification that you could put on a CV or application but you can explain your intention to sit it etc in your covering letter. Unfortunately it might not be enough to shortlist you if it's a big field and/or already having a level 2 qualification is essential but it'd be worth applying anyway as long as you explain and are an otherwise strong candidate.

Haven't really answered your Q though- yes you can just take assessments, especially functional skills as the exam timings are more flexible than GCSE, but you need to find a registered centre that will agree to put you in for it as a candidate without doing a course.

I work in adult education and we have had people desperate to complete functional skills maths and English in short time because they want to start college or university in the September.

We offer free courses so our students have to build up a certain amount of class hours and sit a diagnostic test and pass practice papers with us before we book the exam.

You can however avoid physical classes and sign up for online self learning courses and pay to sit the exam online yourself (at nominated learning centres). You can then sit the exam at a time convenient to you and it will be marked very quickly as it's online.

The online learning portals will take you through the basic lessons and you can access free past papers from city and guilds etc to understand the language of exam papers and what exactly they expect you to write to achieve your marks.

This years English standards are changing significantly however and past years practice papers will be much easier and not a guide to the new exams.
