Is 30 too old to go back to college?

Hi, I'm stuck in a retail job, which I kind of enjoy, but I know I'm destined for more.

I started off part time whilst at college, then the allure of a full time wage and not loving my course meant I dropped out and worked full time from 17.

Have since met DP bought a house and have 2 DC. Now they're coming up to school age I really want to look at going back to college and studying to become a midwife. I just don't know if it's possible/realistic that I can. I definitely have the potential to work hard and I was very academic, but not sure how it would work with work, looking after the children and the house, as well as the financial implications.

I know I'm still fairly young, but I feel like if I don't try and make changes soon, I'll be stuck in a job that doesn't challenge me, and I'll be embarrassed to admit that I do.

I just don't know where to start. My only qualifications are GCSE's all A-C I'm just worried I've missed my chance at a 'proper career'

Go and talk to your local college about Access courses. They can be a bit full on, with you applying to Universities very soon after starting. So if you decide to apply next year you could use the time to get some work experience and explore possible courses.

No absolutely not! Are you crazy?!
You're a baby! An access course is a good idea as is going to have a chat with someone at college.

I went back to college when I was about 30 having got fed up having no real career. It wasn't easy balancing adult life (family, bills etc) with full time education. I drove a taxi for most of it as that gave me flexibility, and an education of a different sort. I'm 53 now, have a great career and have never been out of work. If you want it you will make it happen.

You could be working another 38 years. Do more education if it would help you get a job in something you'd enjoy more.

Nope I've just finished my degree and I'm 39! Starting a Masters in September. It's been tough but also one of the most rewarding times of my whole life. I got a First in my degree and couldn't be prouder!!

My husband left school at 15 with no qualifications. He did a one year access to HE course and has just graduated with an honours degree from a RG university, aged 45.

So proud of him!

Definitely not! I just turned 50 and am about to start teacher training. Your life is whatever you want it to be. Go for it, and best of luck!
