Are predicted grades for university based on AS grades?

DS is doing AS levels this year and was wondering if those grades (presumably out in August with the A levels?) will be used as his predicted ones for UCAS?

If so, there are no A* for AS levels are they, so how would that affect things? Or does the school give their own predicted grade?

I know a lot of schools have dropped AS levels now but his still does them for some reason!

The school should tell the students what they base their A level predictions on, as it will vary from school to school. Your DS needs to ask his tutor.

Generally, where AS is still taken, the results will be used. Commonly, schools would predict up one grade from the AS result, unless the actual score obtained was low in the grade, so an A at AS might be translated into an A* and so on. However, some schools didn't/ won't predict up.

Remember that AS grades have to be declared to UCAS, so universities will be able to see them. i.e. they will be able to see if thete is an apparent discrepancy between achieved and predicted performance.

DDs matched her AS grades BUT they didn't for all - it depends on the teachers and their perception of your childs work ethic, whether they had a spectacularly bad day for one exam etc.

For A*'s, I think they're predicted for those who got roughly above 90% as AS

I think it depends on the school...DD not doing AS's but she is sitting what would have been her summer exams really early (straight after Easter - in fact, two exams are on the day before the school return from Easter break). I believe all the A levels DD are taking have already completed the work that would have been done if AS exams would have been sat...so I guess the exams will be very similar to AS exams.

The school has stated they will use these exams plus what they are working at in class to predict grades...apparently they do the exams early so they have a full term to work on the next stage of A levels without disruption (which I suppose makes sense).

Only just feel we have got over GCSE's!
