My oldest went ronthe one in question for Sports and Exercise Science and they had great equipment so think more along those vocational tech lines. It is like an exPoly/Tech College rather than physics/chem etc. Also not the type of college that attracts humanities students per se. It does actually I believe lend to the argument that there ahould be Vocational Colleges or dare I say it Polys!! The problem for them is that RG unis are offering the courses too with bells and whistles on!

KingscoteStaff · 08/03/2019 09:58

To be honest, I’m surprised more universities don’t go bust. I can’t think of a single one that has shut - except things like UMIST and Bretton Hall that were amalgamated with other institutions.

If you look at other businesses with similar budgets, they go bust all the time! Well, not all the time, but you know what I mean.

Stickerrocks · 08/03/2019 14:48

They need shiny facilities to get the overseas students. They need to then hope the investment pays off. Luckily the exchange rate has worked in their favour over the past few years, but it may get harder to attract the cash if student visas are restricted to 3 years etc.

DevaDiva · 09/03/2019 13:00

My daughter is at the Cambridge History Masterclass today, her dad has taken her, it's my turn for the next one wherever that might be. Weird (but comforting/reassuring) to think she could right now be chatting to one of your DCs! I wonder if she'll tell them she's only there because I found out about it on Mumsnet?!...probably not Grin

I've mostly been a longtime lurker and popped on after a while to see if anyone else is there and can see that while the posts are not so prolific there's lots to catch up on, not least the cluster group! Will scroll back and get up to date Smile

OKBobble · 09/03/2019 13:16

My son is there and I went to he parents session at 11 and am currentlt have a cuppa and slice of cake in John Lewis. A quick scan of the cafe area doesn't lead me to assume your DH is here.Grin

DevaDiva · 09/03/2019 15:08

More likely to find him in a public house SmileHe's the tall man, not much hair and is there with 2 of our male friends. Just texted him and he says DD has met some children of Mumsnet, will find out more....

Stickerrocks · 09/03/2019 15:15

I'm impressed your DD is talking to anyone. DD spotted someone she vaguely recognised from college when she went, said hi & went back to her phone!

DevaDiva · 09/03/2019 15:21

Nerves will have taken over, she can't stay quiet for long!!!

TheFirstOHN · 09/03/2019 15:28

Hi DevaDiva
DS2 went to the Physics Masterclass on the train. He was the only one from his school who went. He said he did chat to the other young people in his row, and he managed to find some people to eat lunch with.

DevaDiva · 09/03/2019 15:33

That's good to hear, @TheFirstOHN She was worried everyone would be 'too posh' as her friend didn't have the best experience at an open day there a few weeks ago.

OKBobble · 09/03/2019 16:03

There waa one other from DS's school there who he sat with because he is ok! Apparently he doesn't even want to go to Cambridge and was made to go today because his brother is there now and his Dad went too. Some parents will never learn.

DevaDiva · 09/03/2019 16:30

I wonder how many parents force their children along? Hmm DD met two really nice girls and has had a good day, will get a full debrief this evening.

KingscoteStaff · 09/03/2019 16:59

Don't forget to debrief them of the lecturers' names and their topics in case you want to put them on PS.

DS forgot name of professor and we had to scroll through the faculty web page going, "Not him, not her, like him but with glasses..." until we found him!

DevaDiva · 09/03/2019 17:41

Thanks @KingscoteStaff good tip, I'll get DD to note it down.

OKBobble · 09/03/2019 18:02

DS just said when I mentioned that yes I must remember if I get an offer that I need to avoid those 2!

DevaDiva · 09/03/2019 23:11

Well DD had a lovely day but was a bit bored by the lectures as they were on medieval history which isn't really her thing. Think we need to make a return visit so she can see more of the university. She did meet 2 very nice girls who have added her on Instagram...onwards and upwards Smile

Comefromaway · 10/03/2019 09:57

Hi folks, just checking in. The thread seems to drop off active conversations very easily these days.

There has been quite a bit going on but mostly involving younger ds who has dropped from being top of top set maths to them being concerned he’s even going to pass.

For some reason I don’t get notifications if I’ve been tagged.

I received a Pm From okbobble but I’m sorry but I thought it was a dodgy spam link so if it could be sent again with instructions I’d be grateful.

Will do

OKBobble · 10/03/2019 11:18

DevaDiva - that was DS too but I did point out as well as all the modules he can opt into there will be some compulsory ones.

DevaDiva · 10/03/2019 14:15

Good point @OKBobble , she's off to Oxford in a few weeks on a college organised visit.

At the moment she's favouring Exeter but hasn't actually visited yet! I'm just pleased she's not quite so adamant about going to a London uni as I really don't think we can afford the accommodation and travel.

OKBobble · 10/03/2019 15:44

DevaDIva - yes Bristol and Exeter on DS preferred lists too with Bristol havingbrhe edge because he likes going to gigs and partying Shock

DevaDiva · 12/03/2019 20:32

Finally caught up on the thread, enjoy the cluster! Hope you'll all be around for UCAS application deadline, mocks and the final exams Shock

I've been around since GCSE single digits thread; a prolific reader but sporadic poster and have really appreciated all the advice on here. I'll keep checking in Smile

TheFirstOHN · 12/03/2019 20:46

he likes going to gigs and partying

DS1 likes live music and socialising. DS2 is hoping for a university experience that's the diametric opposite of this. Smile

Oratory1 · 12/03/2019 22:24

My two are v different too - that’s why it’s not so much about the best uni but the one that suits them most

LooseAtTheSeams · 13/03/2019 09:19

My two are very different - although DS2 is keen to go to the same sixth form as his brother so there's one similarity!
