The parent's session was SOOOO helpful.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 02/03/2019 18:21

Right then: we'll be there. Should I wear a red carnation and carry a copy of The Times?

OKBobble · 02/03/2019 18:33

Elizabeth - I will look out for you!!

Stickerrocks · 02/03/2019 19:05

You need a code word or phrase. How about "Brexit should increase sales of Spam"?

Stickerrocks · 02/03/2019 19:10

Elizabeth there are lots if summer school opportunities available as well, that I had no idea about until we starred sharing info. Google year 12 summer schools or look opportunities any relatively local unis are offering. I was clueless, because I thought you could still just bung down some reasons why you liked history, throw in a few achievements and get offers. How times have changed.

242Mummy · 02/03/2019 19:48

Totally changed. It was a doddle back in the old days. A consultant friend told me he got into Med school (now morphed into Imperial) with hardly any effort (he was the laziest person he knew, by his own admission) and A-level grades of BBC!! UCAT and BMAT not required then either. Really makes you feel sorry for the sixth formers jumping through hoops, doing months, if not years, of volunteering, job shadowing and work experience to even have a fighting chance.

Stickerrocks · 02/03/2019 19:58

& sorry for the ones whose schools didn't start to prod them about everything on offer weeks ago. So many opportunities, so little time.

PeggyIsInTheNarrative · 02/03/2019 20:16

That’s interesting 242 Our local med school takes students with very high GCSEs. The doctors I work with say that the med students are nice, conscientious people but may not have other qualities needed to thrive in medicine.

Bluebelle123 · 02/03/2019 20:23

Peggy did they say what qualities they would need? DS is considering the medicine route but not 100% sure its for him, so trying to find out as much as possible.

PinkPaperCrown · 02/03/2019 20:24

Hi everyone,
A1ways here - would love to join the cluster group so I can tell you what’s really been going on (had to change a few details as everything became so personal and identifying). I’ve had to resort to lurking for the last few months. I’ve downloaded cluster and sent a PM.

242Mummy · 02/03/2019 20:35

peggy Consultant friend is now in his 50s so we are looking at entry requirements circa 30 years ago. High GCSEs, A-levels, UCAT or BMAT now the 'normal' requirement. It's a hurdle at every stage!

Bluebelle123 GMC's Qualities of a Good Doctor is a good place to start looking.

Stickerrocks · 02/03/2019 20:37

I don't think I can send you the link, but I've asked the others to. You'll need fill us in on all your news.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 02/03/2019 20:39

Pink, OKBobble has a link, but she’s not been around this evening. It’s almost like she has a social life! Wink

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 02/03/2019 20:40

Sticker, can I send it?

PinkPaperCrown · 02/03/2019 20:43

I can’t wait Ellen, don’t worry!

PinkPaperCrown · 02/03/2019 20:44

I DM’d OKBobble (but I’m not sure who that it is!)

Stickerrocks · 02/03/2019 20:46

See if you have a PM from me

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 02/03/2019 20:46

It might have to be an admin.

PinkPaperCrown · 02/03/2019 20:47

Many thanks Sticker and Ellen 🙂 I think I’ve successfully joined!

PeggyIsInTheNarrative · 02/03/2019 20:54

Bluebelle I think they are saying that the med school is missing people who would be great doctors but perhaps didn’t have 100% focus at 14/15/16. They think that of course you need the academic ability plus an interest in medicine (huge range of roles) but also the ability to cope with knocks and really high demands in terms of volume of work. General practice and hospital medicine is really pressured they talk about the importance of relationships with your colleagues and friends, finding ways to care for yourself, sustain yourself so that you can keep caring for others.

Sorry that’s not very specific is it?

whistl · 02/03/2019 21:30

I'm an admin. I can sign you up but I need some sort of notification. Send me a mumsnet PM if I don't notice you.

Update on the mistake in the Maths mock:
I saw the head of maths this evening (we know each other socially) and he said that from looking at the exam scripts, it seems that only 4 students (out of over 100) even noticed the error.

Stickerrocks · 02/03/2019 21:58

Doh! Your DS is going to go far.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 02/03/2019 23:05

DS3’s FM core pure AS mock had a mistake on it, but most of the 12 spotted it, so probably not the same mistake. But worrying that it’s so common. Really don’t want time wasting mistakes on the real thing.

Bluebelle123 · 03/03/2019 08:15

Peggy & 242 thanks for the info.
