Well, took ds to an apprenticeship launch evening at a (relatively) local company last night and he is even more convinced that is what he wants to do. In an ideal world it would be that company too. So, the good news and bad news - good news he is firming up his ideas and has a goal to aim for, bad news they have 25 places nationally across levels 4 and 6 and last year had 1000 applicants.

Oratory1 · 01/03/2019 16:37

Agree whistl re finding another platform - I often go to write something but then wonder if I’m outing myself to lurkers (probably have already)

Oratory1 · 01/03/2019 16:40

And just a thought - most of our dc thankfully seem to be rolling along nicely at the moment ( hoping I’m not tempting fate) but please post if that’s not the case, we have all been there too

Kilash · 01/03/2019 16:54

I don't mind another platform - it might help us recognise each other at open days!

242Mummy · 01/03/2019 16:56

Happy to go wherever the group goes!

Funny sort of end to the week - DS1 happy with violin lesson today and going to start on a concerto (which might lead to solo performance next year) but also sad as he has been told off for various things. Are your DC very sensitive when it comes to this sort of thing? DS1 takes it very personally and his instinctive reaction is to fight back/argue and then to give up the activity. Quite an immature way of dealing with criticism - not sure how to help him! On the one hand, I'd like for him to see things from others' perspectives but on the other, I want to fight his detractors!!! How very dare they tell my wonderful son off!

He was also complaining about one of his subject teachers - she is trying to get him and his friend to take notes in a different way and he says no, he is happy with his own style, it works for him (he has a folder with beautifully written notes). I can't understand why she would then insist that he does it her way? He is working at A* level in her class (as is his friend)! She asked him 'Why won't you try something new?' Why does he need to try something new when something old clearly works? Am I being unreasonable?

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 01/03/2019 17:39

Also happy to move if that’s the consensus. It will be strange to open up a bit more and will take a bit of getting used to.

242, not unreasonable. I wish DS would take better notes, though. Trying to get through to him that at university, which is his intended destination, there may well not be any text books and certainly won’t be any revision guides and his own notes will form the basis of his revision.

I’m not sure DS has made quite the leap in maturity that some of yours have. He still seems like a young 16yo. This year is easier than last as he’s one of those DC with particular talents and not at all an all rounder, so dropping his grade 5 and 6 subjects has been somewhat of a relief. He’s enjoying getting some recognition from his maths teachers of his ability and good attitude in lessons, which is still a motivator for him.

bpisok · 01/03/2019 17:59

I am also happy to follow the majority (assuming I am invited!).
I suspect that several of our DC could be identified fairly easily if you knew them. I am not 100% sure that even the name changes are providing enough anonymity....although it does confuse me at times!!!!

TheFirstOHN · 01/03/2019 18:15

I'd be happy to migrate.
If the majority vote is to stay here, one idea would be to start the next thread in OTBT.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 01/03/2019 18:52

Nah, bpisok, we don’t want your type! Grin

Oratory1 · 01/03/2019 19:08

OTBT ??

PeggyIsInTheNarrative · 01/03/2019 19:33

I don’t mind where we hang out. Wink

OTBT is a board that doesn’t show up in active threads so not hidden but much less traffic.

I’m not posting about what my y12 is hoping to do as it’s really niche. I also try(and fail) to not say too much about the other DC.

My youngest has really run into some difficulties and we are looking at a move but I’m not posting much about that either Confused

I guess I’m saying I’m hanging back but still enjoying the chat.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 01/03/2019 19:37

Off the beaten track?

KingscoteStaff · 01/03/2019 20:32

Nooooooo don’t leeeeeeeeave me... I don’t do face book and I’ll be here all alooooooooone...

whistl · 01/03/2019 20:41

Why couldn't you come with us, Kingscote?

OP posts:
whistl · 01/03/2019 20:43

I don't think it's going to be Facebook. Probably that other one that Oratory mentioned (the one I've already forgotten the name of!)

OP posts:
Oratory1 · 01/03/2019 20:46

Sorry Peggy hope you get some joy with the youngest

KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse · 01/03/2019 20:56

Just checking in so you don't forget me when you go. I'm worried about being left Home Alone to fight off the burglars!

I'd support a move. I'm well overdue a name change and wouldn't be at all surprised if I've been recognised although I don't care that much. I don't post anything I wouldn't say to anyone if they were bored enough to listen but it still does feel a bit public here.

TheFirstOHN · 01/03/2019 20:59

Well DS2's "mocks" were good practice / preparation in one way: both the Chemistry exam and the Maths exam had an error in one of the questions. In both exams the impossible question was the last one on the paper, so DS2 just assumed each was a harder 'trick' question where you had to jump through more hoops to get the marks. 😆

In past years this has occurred in actual A-level public exams, so at least DS2 has learned what to do should this happen:

  • Stay calm.
  • Answer the parts of the question that are possible to answer.
  • Don't spend a disproportionate amount of time on that question.
  • In your working, note the error and include a correction if you can quickly do so.
  • Put it behind you and move on to the next question.
EllenJanesthickerknickers · 01/03/2019 21:16

Well done, first’s DS2. As someone who gets to do all the cutting and sticking to make up mock papers for my dept I can sympathise with the paper setter. Possibly an overworked teacher (or technician Wink ) trying to put a paper together from past papers. Horrible to make an error like that knowing how stressful it can be for the students.

I’ve downloaded the cluster app. Are we going for our real names or MN names?

whistl · 01/03/2019 21:52

Real names would be my vote, but again happy to go with the flow.

Has anyone said they won't migrate?

whistl · 01/03/2019 21:52

TheFirst that would throw DS. Well done your DS

OP posts:
abitofastate · 01/03/2019 21:57

I also feel that sometimes I say things that are too outing, so understand why a move might be a good idea if everyone is happy with it.

DS has now had his physics lack of notes inspection. He seems to have convinced his teacher that he doesn't need his notes to revise. He has his textbook and "other sources" and will do practice questions. Even though it fills me with dread, it is how he revised for his science GCSEs, so we shall see how his year 11 "mocks" go after Easter.

I'm not sure he has matured as much as some of your DC. He is very sue of himself, but not sure that's always a good thing.

whistl · 01/03/2019 22:07

Another advantage to moving... we can write double A star without having to be inventive!

OP posts:
bpisok · 01/03/2019 23:24

Let's just hope many of us need to write A star 😀

As for real names - that's fine by me.

....it may even be useful in other ways. I might be able to help with some things - work experience, apprenticeships etc that I have been reluctant to post openly about.

bpisok · 01/03/2019 23:29

Thefirst - getting through that under test conditions must be 'character building'.
Must be very disconcerting- glad he got through it intact
