Offer days (feb/March after application) are also v useful. Either to firm up plans if you’ve already visited - or another chance to visit one you put on your form but weren’t able to get to first time round.

Kilash · 22/02/2019 16:19

I'm also liking TheFirst's reviews! Particularly as there is some overlap with ds's current choices.
EllenJanes I would appreciate some Maths reviews! We are looking at Warwick, then probably Bath, Nottingham and Southampton. Have discounted Durham and St Andrews as too far away and UCL becuase of low student satisfaction.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 22/02/2019 16:47

Kilash,, for maths, we looked at Nottingham, Southampton and Warwick. I really liked Nottingham, but my enthusiasm just managed to put DS1 off!

Nottingham.

1st year lots of contact time, some lessons on top of lectures which I thought sounded really good.

Halls were a mix of catered and self catering which was unusual, most places are self catering.

Lovely campus, park-like but near the centre of Nottingham which meant it had best of both worlds, campus yet in the city.

Southampton.

Maths building really ugly, but once you are in it, you can’t see it!

Concentration on financial maths on open day. Course can exempt you from various finance exams. DS1 not interested in finance, though.

They took STEP into account in their offer, grade 2 and above.

Nice campus, bus ride away from Southampton centre, but on the route in. Lots of accommodation available just off campus. All self catering.

Warwick. DS is at Warwick.

Lots of options on the course. Small amount of core subjects compared to others, more options. All optional in 3rd year.

Working groups in 1st year with a mentor/post grad. These were compulsory while tutor groups seemed not to be. 1st year exams worth 10% of final degree. This was unusual as most places seem to use first year to get everyone up to the same level and you just have to pass it to get to 2nd year. Warwick has a higher offer than most so maybe they are already at a good enough standard. It was quite high standard from the start.

STEP also included in offer, but Grade 1 required.

Campus lovely in first year. Lots of variety of accommodation, from more expensive studio flats, or big en-suite rooms, to smaller en-suite room and on the cheaper side, small rooms with shared bathrooms. Preferences made and applied for after results day, so no problem putting it as insurance.

DS1 lives in Coventry, about 4 miles from campus and cycles or gets the bus. About 60% live in Leamington which is nicer but a 30/40 minute bus ride away. Lots of university managed accommodation owned by private landlords which can be paid for termly, like halls which meant you didn’t feel at the mercy of private landlords. You have to choose your 2nd year accommodation early, though. Before Dec of 1st year.

DS1 also really liked Exeter.

Big problem for us was no guaranteed accommodation unless you put it as firm. I didn’t go to Exeter open day, but really liked the city.

Not many halls on campus. All seemed expensive compared to Warwick.

Birmingham.

DS1 went there on his own, so not much info. Lovely campus. The very definition of a ‘red brick university!’

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 22/02/2019 16:49

DS1 should have looked at Bath. But it was too close to my family for his comfort! It’s up a very big hill. But all of Bath is either up a hill or down one! Grin

Oratory1 · 22/02/2019 17:08

DD1 is at Exeter. Course and campus have been great and definitely suits her as small safe city close to nice campus. She took one look at the ‘city’ uni s of Sheffield eg and decided it wasn’t for her. DD2 decided Exeter was too white middle class and too safe for her and whilst that’s a sweeping generalisation there probably is some truth in it. A reminder that what suits one dc won’t suit it here - a bit like choosing schools. They do get a ‘feel’ for places alongside course content.

Oratory1 · 22/02/2019 17:09

‘Won’t suit another’

KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse · 22/02/2019 17:13

Oratory I agree. Dd has ruled out Warwick because she doesn't want to travel in and she thinks campuses are "weird". Confused

She wants a "cool" city so Edinburgh and Bristol are high on the list.

I have to keep reminding myself that I made my choice based on football team so I'm keeping out of it!

Oratory1 · 22/02/2019 17:18

You lot have galvanised us in to action. DS doesn’t want to put too much time into selection or visiting as first choice is still apprenticeship but will apply. He will probably aim for taster sessions rather than open days as that will help the uni or job choice as well. So so far he will probably go for CS (or maths with CS) at a range including Southampton, Birmingham, Bath as first choices and then Surrey and maybe Loughborough as safer bets. Criteria being within 2 hours from home, campus, reasonably high ranked but not top level (ie not requiring multiple A stars and full of natural maths genius’s - absolutely nothing against maths stars but he isn’t one so needs next level down)

Any comments on our homework so far gratefully recieved 😀😀

Somethingsmellsnice · 22/02/2019 17:27

Dad update: he is now out of ICU and in a step down ward with a view to going into the acute rehab unit over the weekend. Although it will be a long haul he is well enough now for me to get my booked flight home tonight. DS has informed me other than his interview and survey his EPQ essay is complete and ready for me to proif read for him upon my return.

Kilash · 22/02/2019 17:30

EllenJanes thanks so much, that's really helpful. We have been to Warwick and ds and I both liked it. Oxbridge covered by masterclass and Faculty Open days in April, we will do Southamptom and Bath in the summer and then Nottingham in Sept I think.

I think quite a few of us are looking at the same places - will be interesting to compare notes later in the year.

Kick Birstol is my home town and very cool indeed! I have a coule of neices who studied there and loved it. I can't remember what your dd wants to study - it's a humanities subject I think?

Kilash · 22/02/2019 17:31

Something that's great news, what a relief for you all x

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 22/02/2019 17:33

Oratory, DS3 is similar. He might get A for maths but might not get an A for his 3rd subject. I’m hoping the AAA type unis will accept AAB.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 22/02/2019 17:37

Crossed with you, something, that’s good news. Flowers

Bristol was my home town, too, Kilash. I think despite the potential contextual offer, it might be a bit too party central for DS3.

Oratory1 · 22/02/2019 17:45

Great news on both fronts Something !!

Oratory1 · 22/02/2019 17:49

Agree Ellen I think they will particularly in current market. But it’s an important consideration not just for assessing whether they will get in but also I think dc will do better and fit in and settle if others on the course are a similar level ie they are neither struggling to keep up or bored and way ahead. Of course there are exceptions who love to push themselves and be challenged too

LooseAtTheSeams · 22/02/2019 17:51

Something great news!Thanks

Somethingsmellsnice · 22/02/2019 17:52

I can't believe I spelt proofread incorrectly!! Grin

TheFirstOHN · 22/02/2019 18:10

EllenJanesthickerknickers
Thank you, those reviews are really helpful, especially Nottingham and Warwick.

TheFirstOHN · 22/02/2019 18:11

Somethingsmellsnice
Glad to hear your dad is making good progress.

242Mummy · 22/02/2019 18:42

Something That must be such a relief - hope he gets well soon! Any indication of when he might be able to be discharged?

I have been galvinised into action by all of you! Have booked DS1 onto BMAT course and will look into UCAT course too. Possibly interview course as well as he is not naturally sociable and can be quite shy. Hopefully being prepared is half the battle?
He is already going to a taster session at Leicester in April and an open day at Barts in June.

I have (foolishly?) not been looking at accommodation and costs. Just focused on entry criteria which are so complicated for Medicine. Think it might be wise to start checking!

Somethingsmellsnice · 22/02/2019 18:45

I think with medicine you apply everywhere and see what offers come in and then look at accommodation etc. I know some top notch students who only got 2/5 offers!!

Oratory1 · 22/02/2019 19:07

I agree I think for medicine you need to look at selecting criteria (which vary from school to school) and go for those that best match your strengths. Unfortunately you can’t really be too choosy

Oratory1 · 22/02/2019 19:08

Selection criteria that should say

bpisok · 22/02/2019 19:10

Just caught up on the post and whistl's spreadsheet sounds like mine. I also dumped out the data from Unistats for course rankings, whichuni and times Uni rankings into tabs plus a table that i found which identifies whether they are campus based or not....so a bit of conditional formatting and look-ups and it all works really well - she just enters her ratings it grabs all the data and it works out how good a fit it is.

BUT - one of the top 10 was Warwick. She went to see it on Tuesday and hated it so I guess statistics will never trump the heart hahaha.

242Mummy · 22/02/2019 19:48

Oratory1 and Something Thanks for the reassurance that I am on the right track! To be honest, it's an ongoing source of worry and stress - always at the back of my mind. Really really hoping to have a success story this time next year. It would be such a weight off my shoulders.
