Beautiful. Always said before I wouldn’t like to be away for Christmas but now the thought definitely appeals.

Oratory1 · 21/12/2018 18:24

May be it’s no longer having parents around makes the thought more attractive - and seeing that sky

whistl · 21/12/2018 19:44

Not if it involves going via Gatwick though!

Can I ask a non education question? I know there are more suitable boards, but you guys rock.

I am thinking of trying Lighter Life VLCD in the New Year. Not because it’s the NY but because I’m huge. Not helped with stress of DD and FIL death this year.

I could try weight watchers or similar but the CBT element of Lighter Life appeals & NHS now recommend VLCDs. Anyone tried it?

TheFirstOHN · 21/12/2018 21:03

I know two people who lost a lot of weight on it, but both put the weight back on.

whistl · 21/12/2018 21:29

I know to people who lost 5 stones or more on it. It took about 10 months. They both just have been size 20, at least, and they both gained it all back after a year or so.
I also know someone who was closer to size 14 and she did the version where you eat one a day and have shakes the rest of the time. She got down to a size 10 and had stayed there for at least 8 years now.
It works, but it doesn't teach you be habits despite the talks.
I can see the temptation to lose a couple of stones and then do slimming world to train yourself to eat better but 10 months of lighter life with never biting into anything would be really hard.

Twinplusone · 21/12/2018 21:37

Sigh..... never had much success with slimming world.

Kilash · 21/12/2018 22:33

What about 5:2 Twin? Lots of people I know have had a lot of success. I tried a couple of years ago and shifted a stone without it being too painful. I found I naturally ate less on non fast days, perhaps because I was very conscious of what I was eating on fast days.

Stickerrocks · 21/12/2018 22:52

I agree with TheFirst, as my neighbour paid a fortune with no long term impact. DH has lost around 7 stone this year by writing down every item he has drunk and eaten since 1 Jan. I lost a couple of stone the same way.

Twin I'm not a fan of those diets but I know sometimes you reach the point where you'll try anything. I've been there Sad

I think there is some benefit to the vlcd method but if you can do it yourself ie buy/ prepare / cook the food you get a much better understanding of long term healthy eating. Obviously it all takes a lot of time and will power but in my experience any quick fix won't last long.

I'd really recommend The Blood Sugar Diet book by Michael Mosley. There is a tv show which may be on YouTube too. I'm not normally one to recommend a specific book or fad diet but that book really kick started my weight loss last year after years of stop-start attempts.

Also I really recommend MyFitnessPal. It's a really simple to use app that tracks calories, nutrients etc.

Good luck with it. I'll be joining you (but not until next Wednesday Xmas Blush

ShalomJackie · 22/12/2018 02:26

I would recommend Cambridge Weight Plan which is similar to Lighter Life. You have 1:1 with a consultant and there are various steps you go up as you get cloaer to goal so that you are taught new eating habits etc. If you look online and put in your postcode it will give you details of consultants near you.

I lost 4 stone and maintained it for 6 years before I went back to old ways and have gained a bit so am shifting it again. I have done Ww in the past and put on doing SW!!

Stickerrocks · 22/12/2018 06:23

I could subtitle this section to how we lost 9 stone between us whilst DD did GCSEs for the purists, but I do enjoy the random chitchat that creeps in to this thread. It is so much nicer to get trusted opinions. If you posted this Q on in a another section you will get 3 sensible answers before some one comes on to provoke by saying "eat less & exercise more you morbidly obese drain on NHS resources" to someone weighing 8 stone & a size 12.

Shalom are you simply in paradise or are you on a cruise?

Oratory1 · 22/12/2018 08:40

Beautifully put as usual Sost. Merry Christmas from me too !

Twinplusone · 22/12/2018 08:57

Sorry for derailing the thread stickerrocks but I appreciate the trusted opinion of you all. Off to eat Cake Cake

sandybayley · 22/12/2018 09:13

@Twinplusone - I would really recommend a Fitbit (great Christmas present). When I first got mine I got into serious walking chasing the step counts. It can get very competitive! I then progressed to running and ended up doing half marathons. At the same time I tracked everything I ate and lost a couple of stone as a result.

Up-Ing your activity levels won't make you lose weight on its own but combined with sensible eating but I think it's the most sustainable way to lose weight.

Twinplusone · 22/12/2018 09:17

Hmm which Fitbit did you go for sandybayley

LooseAtTheSeams · 22/12/2018 10:19

I am full of healthy resolutions for January but literally no will power left at the moment! I might try to get to the gym as a pre-emotive strike tomorrow though. However, I've got lots of books stacked up waiting to be read and I'd rather be in the warm reading them!
Sostenueto - we're at the 'bits and pieces' stage as well! I hope you and yours have a very happy Christmas and lots of WineCakeThanks.

sandybayley · 22/12/2018 10:22

@Twinplusone - I think I started out with the Flex. I now have a Garmin as that's better for running with but a Flex would be fine to get started with.

Stickerrocks · 22/12/2018 10:45

I've got a flex as I can 7se it for swimming and it logs tennis. I didn't want to waste too much money if it was going to be a five minute wonder.

Merry Christmas to you too Sost.

Stickerrocks · 22/12/2018 13:56

Actually Twin how many more years of exams have you got to go through? Exam stress does terrible things to people! (As I tuck into a slice of Heston's Black Forest pannetone after my annual Christmas cleaning effort).
