A levels for the sake of it

DC has no idea what they want to do in terms of career and unsure if they want to go to uni in the future. Has chosen English & Geography A levels and as nothing else of interest to them on offer at college a BTEC In something they enjoyed at GCSE but that's not a particularly well regarded subject. Is this just going to be a waste of 2 years or is the general college experience going to be worthwhile enough in terms of developing more skills in independent study as well as the benefits in being in an environment where they will be treated more maturely and hopefully develop confidence in themselves?

Taking a BTEC in a subject that he enjoys won't prevent him from going to uni should he choose to do so.
It may enhance his employability should he decide on a different route post 18 as well.

What BTEC is it?

His other 2 subjects are facilitating subjects and if he then does the BTEC as his third and gets good grades it will not preclude him from going to uni if that is what he wants to do at that stage.

Also the BTEC may prove to be the most useful if he can pursue a career in it and it is something he loves.

You seem a little dismissive of his choices.

Not being dismissive at all, just trying to type with as little detail as possible. I am extremely proud of DC as well as the choices they have made. A throwaway comment about BTECs was what prompted me to ask the question. I feel that they show a DC can not just study to pass exams but also show they can produce quality coursework. Sorry not framing my wording that well but trying not to post what I said IRL on here!

Get DC to do what he likes the most. I loved Art but did not take it as it was a "pointless subject". I went to uni, got a business style degree and now work in Marketing. I love my job but I wish I had taken Art A levels so I could of been accepted on to do a graphic design course of some kind. Graphic design and marketing can go hand in hand so nicely if you are working on the creative side of marketing. So moral of the story, do what you love and the money will follow.

Except for photography, that shit is a waste of time and money.

Look at it this way, what else will DC do instead? They change a lot between 16 and 20, so hopefully maturity will set in at some point!

A BTEC with 2 A levels is a really good mix. BTECs involve a lot of coursework and constant deadlines, but (unless it's changed recently) don't involve exams. DD did 3 BTECs and it was really hard going, but she much preferred that to doing exams. She got top grades in all 3 and is just about to start her dream job.

"I loved Art but did not take it as it was a "pointless subject". "

Wow Witch I am cross on behalf of your teenage self - what numpty told you that?

There is so much pressure on them to make decisions that will dictate the rest of their life or do they? I see no harm in prolonging education and taking subjects they they enjoy and will be successful at. During the course of two years at college they will be introduced to new ideas, concepts and opportunities that they may not be aware even existed at the start so definitely won't be wasted. All the subjects offered will have some value or they wouldn't be on the curriculum so whether or not it is well regarded is only a matter of opinion.
