Which other A level?

Gcse results are here & dd got A in geography but B in Maths. All of her other A level choices are history related & Maths was going to balance this out but if she really is better at geography.... Which would you go for? She can't decide. No university plans as yet other than she'd like to do something & wants to keep options open

I would say Geography as she has the highest grade for this subject.
A level Maths grades for pupils with grade Bs at GCSE aren't that great and the drop-out rate can be high for these students.

Do what she enjoys best. She is likely to work much much harder and engage more in this.
In reality - most students who come in with a B in GCSE Maths struggle massively with the A-Level.

As a Maths teacher - I would not recommend anyone with a B do Maths A Level, I've just seen too many students struggle.

Interesting - I was also wondering what the point of maths would be without further maths, but it's her decision to make so I'm keeping quiet for now

Maths without further maths is absolutely fine. I did a physics degree with just maths.

Maths with a B is a bad idea though. Go for geography.

She will find maths tough with a grade B. I would either run with geography (if she actually enjoys it) or look at something completely different like economics.

ReservoirDogs · 25/08/2018 22:19

But only do economics if she realises she won't be able to do an economics degree because you need Maths to do an economics degree.

Doing geography will keep that as an option for degree level too.

Thanks all - decision made. History, politics & Geography it is! I think it's the right decision as at the end of the day they are the subjects she enjoys most

Good combination & she needs to do things she loves.

Geography will show she can collect, manage and organise data, produce stats and so on. There is an independent investigation in some syllabuses now where she could really showcase those skills if she is comfortable with maths. And lots of global politics and international relations which should have some synchronicity with her other subjects

A friend who works in university admissions says it can count either as a science or a humanities A level for degree course admission.

Seems a great choice!
