Hello fellow mums!

My oldest DD is looking to apply for a law degree at leading Russel Group universities in a few weeks (LSE and Oxford.)

She is drafting her personal statement currently about what she has done over the course of her studies. So far we have:

  1. highly commended essay in NCH essay competition 2018
  2. working her way through oxford reading list
  3. volunteered at her local primary school helping yr3&4 read
  4. ran an events management business at school and where the overall winners of her district
  5. also doing the LNAT in a few weeks 6)EPQ in law with a mentor of a retired oxford professor

However, she is missing something I think may be very important, work experience!Confused

She has emailed many places which have either ignored her or told her to send her CV to them and then has been ignored. So I am reaching out on anybody on here who may be able to help my DD or give her some contact information for someone who may allow her to shadow or offer her a week experience? Possibly in London, Maidstone or Medway (Kent) area if possible.

Also, any more advice on what else she can write/do in a personal statement that will insure her as much success as possible

P.S. I am trying to make her go and watch a few cases at court before she goes back to school so that might also be able to be included.

Thanks everyone Smile

How old is she? Many law firms do not take work experience students until they are at university. She may be better off asking in a local high street firm.

My DH and I are both solicitors and DH is involved in recruiting trainees and interns (uni students). He has given work experience to either clients or contacts 6th form kids as a gesture of goodwill but wouldn't necessarily take random school age kids.

He prefers to see that someone has worked in an actual job no matter how "crap" because it shows work ethic, usually customer service experience, being responsible to get yourself somewhere on time and follow orders etc.

He doesn't really hold much out for work experience per se because the student doesn't actually do anything meaningful!

She might do better asking CABs or Law Centres or the legal departments of local government.

@ReservoirDogs DD is 17. She worked a year in Superdrug and now works in Sainsbury's so has the customer service element to your reply.

She emailed her local council you gave her and address and asked for dates who then ignored her response so I was a bit confused on why they gave her hope in the first place.

She's also tried many local solicitors such as high street ones near by who have said that they cannot offer it to her so I'm a bit stuck on how I can help.

Local MP? Ours gave DD a week. Not law but she had to do research etc so could work? She was GCSE year.
