Y13 Summer term: Finishing Lessons, Starting Exams and leaving Sixth Form

catslife · 22/04/2018 15:07

So our dcs are now on the last term of sixth form, finishing off lessons and starting their exams.
How did that happen - doesn't seem that long ago since they started Y12.
This is the thread where we support each other as our dcs revise and start their exams, finish off coursework, leave sixth form and make plans for what to do with the rest of their lives. This may involve going to uni or other alternatives.
Every Y13 parent is welcome to join in whether new to these threads or if you have been with us for a while - the more the merrier.

nettle
She went out and spent £80 which I’ve PayPaled her back as I felt she deserved a treat on makeup and clothes, the price they charge on ‘fashion clothing’ is ridiculous
It has taken an emotional toll on me as it’s hard to see her so upset when I know this isn’t her? Can’t pull her out because there still not finished in English
Thankyou gingerbeer

Dd is collapsed on the sofa had more tears how her friends care more about university choices and student finance decisions but not when it comes to her health Hmm more tears about stress, more tears about health

Haven’t had a successful day here

chocolateworshipper · 05/05/2018 21:46

Awwww Fantasy I know only too well what it's like to watch your DD go through difficult times Sad One piece advice I would like to give you is to try and look after yourself, because it's so hard to look after your DD if you are run down yourself. Also, in case it gives you any hope - DD went through her awful times at secondary school and didn't do as well in GCSEs - but did well enough to do what she wanted at college and is on track to get very good grades (so GCSEs no longer matter). I really hope that your DD will do well enough to get to the next stage, and that her health will improve enough to succeed in whatever she does next. Big hugs to you and your DD (((((())))))

marmiteloversunite · 05/05/2018 22:02

Oh dear Fantasy, you and your DD are having a really tough week. I am really sorry. Hard for you both to keep battling through! We are all here to support you if you just need a good old moan!!

Nettleskeins · 05/05/2018 22:16

ds has gone off to see Infinity Wars for the second time, an invite so he couldn't bear to refuse. No revision! Angry

LoniceraJaponica · 05/05/2018 22:25

Some good advice from chocolateworshipper

Please look after yourself Fantasy and hugs for your DD. Parenting a teenager who is having a tough time can be soul destroying. Teenage girls can be so self absorbed and barbaric. I keep telling myself that the other gilrs at school are also stressed which is why they ride roughshod over each other.

I hope your DD's treatment is successful and good luck to her in her exams Flowers

FantasyAndHope · 05/05/2018 22:34

Thankyou for all your kind messages
I’m not emotionally drained like dd, it’s more of a maternal ache/pain? Plus I’ve just done 45 hours at work off for 3 days
The joys of shift work Hmm

Nettleskeins · 06/05/2018 14:17

Ds2 has gone to a football match and dd to the library, dh is away in another country for a week. Cue me deciding to completely clear out ds1's room and sort out his revision notes. It is quite dreadful in there, incredibly dusty and I'm not suprised he doesn't do any work in there.

I've put all the English notes in 6 subject categories of box and arranged them on the windowsill in the front room, tidied the room removed most of the personal effects like photos and family stuff (I've put it away somewhere for now), removed the rug and rolled it up, put clean drapes on the chairs and sofa. I hope this is going to give him the "headspace" he needs to concentrate. His room is full of so many distractions and it is associated with him sleeping late and staying up late and generally giving up.

The music revision and the sports Btec work is staying in his room.

Atm he is in the front room singing Sondheim so I don't know whether it has worked really, but he seems very relieved to have escaped his hellhole bedroom and keen for me to sort it out.

everynow and then he says, I am so confused, and I don't know where to start etc, I hope this is going to give him a little help to face up to the sheer volume of work required, The Big Push etc. I've also divided English into 4 weeks and 3 days per topic. Today is Frankensstein, tomorrow the Handmaid Tale is meant to start.

Nettleskeins · 06/05/2018 14:19

Omg he is singing quite beautifully, I am expecting a talent scout passing in the street to suddenly knock on the door. It is rather loud though Hmm ds2 would be now having a breakdown about the sheer volume interrupting his revision..

TheSecondOfHerName · 06/05/2018 14:22

ds has gone off to see Infinity Wars for the second time, an invite so he couldn't bear to refuse. No revision!

Ditto.

LoniceraJaponica · 06/05/2018 15:20

Our libraries don't open on a Sunday. DD did some chemistry revision this morning, and has now gone with some friends to an animal sanctuary. Hopefully she will do some more revision this afternoon.

Feeling glad I didn't have a large family.

marmiteloversunite · 06/05/2018 17:26

Nettle what is it with music students?! Mine sings constantly and often goes to play the piano as a break from revision. I will miss that from September. DD2 is obsessed with Hamilton though so the singing will probably continue.

Nettleskeins · 06/05/2018 17:50

we had Hamilton as well as Sondheim Smile
I'm exhausted, but his room is tidier and smells fresher - lets see how long that lasts Hmm
some papers/notes from Year 12 had clearly not been disturbed, it was an archaelogical dig in there. He seems to be endlessly making new notes possibly because he could never find the old ones.

lonicera animal sanctuary sounds wonderful, esp for a thoughtful geographer like your dd.

derekthe1adyhamster · 06/05/2018 19:06

Lovely to see lots of busy revising students, and Fantasy I hope things begin to brighten up with your DD.
The girlfriend has stayed all weekend, so apart from a couple of hours yesterday whilst she was working, nothing much has happened work wise here.
But he goes back to School tonight, 1 more week of lessons and then study leave! First exam is a week on Wednesday. He's going to lessons so hopefully he'll be able to pull things back ( unless there is drama from the GF)

LoniceraJaponica · 06/05/2018 22:12

DD has done some revision this weekend. I don't think it is enough, but I have promised not to nag.

Nettleskeins · 07/05/2018 11:17

another beautiful day Smile

dd is sitting outside under a parasol revising, having started the day by a brief bout of pressure washing and buying an entire wooden box of (Turkish? Spanish) strawberries from corner shop. She puts me to shame really, she is very energetic and enjoys life! Yesterday she was suggesting we buy a Hot Tub so her friends can come and revise and then sit in the hot tub...argh Smile luckily there is no room for such thing. I said, well next you'll be asking to dig a swimming pool in the back garden (which is 60ft only) and she said, without blinking, yes, I considered that.

Ds2 is listening to a very loud online voice in the bath about biology, it is getting like that bit in Brave New World where little voices are constantly mumuring information to brainwash the infants.

Ds1 is of course, fast asleep. I put up a black out blind yesterday which had fallen down, he immediately removed it, saying he needed the "light". But doesn't that disturb your sleep at 5am, oh, he said airily otherwise I'd never wake up. clearly the east light has not had any effect on him today or most days..

FantasyAndHope · 07/05/2018 11:34

Dd is at school, they have to go on bank holidays
She rang English coursework is on a C which means she needs to get at least two A’s in her papers to get a B overall
Only one person got an A overall but that child is the favourite of the class and both their parents teach in 6th form colleges teaching the same books and coursework so there’s a possibility that child has had a lot more help
Dd is worried and nervous but at least it’s a C and not a D

FantasyAndHope · 07/05/2018 12:36

That should say she’s has gotten her English coursework back
She’s worked out the grade boundaries and she can still get a B as she is stronger in one topic and hoping for an A in that topic and a B in the other which should bring her grade to a B

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2018 17:53

I have a dd who is thoroughly sick of revising. We've been out and she's been doing past papers all day long.

UrsulaPandress · 07/05/2018 17:57

DD has 'done' Germany today. She is rewarding herself with Handmaids and Frankenstein tonight. She seems to be in the zone at the moment. Long may it continue.

flatmouse · 07/05/2018 18:29

DS is getting distracted, but has worked hard all weekend (even managed cinema Friday night, watching boxing out on Saturday night, and meet up with old gang Sunday night!). Currently doing himself a chicken and chorizo stir fry. I'm confident that should he go away to uni, he'll be fine with cooking, so long as he manages the shopping!

TeresasGreen · 07/05/2018 18:38

DD has thrown out two whole boxes of prospectuses and random bits of paper today so she can tidy her bookcase. No revision but still hurrah!

Nettleskeins · 07/05/2018 20:19

Ds went on a hour's walk in the late afternoon today (which is quite unlike him, usually he just goes to the supermarket), looking very stylish in shorts and sunglasses (again rather unlike him) He has been revising since he woke up, at 11.30, and apart from watching Westworld and the walk (he even asked permission Confused) has been polite, charming helpful. I made ds2 go out and buy some sausages, and cook them too, and ds1 even thanked ds2 for the sausages and told him they were delicious.

ursula I love that your dd rewarded herself with Frankenstein, if only ds saw his setbooks in the same light! Yesterday he was discussing Adversity in Handmaid's Tale and using examples from the Tv series, which aren't even in the book, help!!!

LoniceraJaponica · 07/05/2018 20:58

Reading about all the revision everyone else's DC are doing is making me nervous. DD hasn't done anything like as much as yours OYBK. Mind you, that is why your DD is Oxbridge material and mine isn't. Oh well, she will end up somewhere that is right for her.

She is really struggling with geography because it is a new syllabus and there are no past papers. Also they have no feedback on their NEA, unlike the history and English students who are allowed to make improvements to theirs. The geography students get one shot at it and that's it.

FantasyAndHope · 07/05/2018 21:15

Dd hasn’t done barely anything loni she’s stressed out but it’s like one of her teachers said small chunks don’t stress!
She’s tired but has finally made a start on last years history!

doistayordoigo · 07/05/2018 21:17

If it makes you feel better Lonicera my DS hasn't been doing as much as some others either, and has his first exam next Wednesday. Not helped by the fact we will have family round the night before as it's my birthday.
