Y13 Summer term: Finishing Lessons, Starting Exams and leaving Sixth Form

catslife · 22/04/2018 15:07

So our dcs are now on the last term of sixth form, finishing off lessons and starting their exams.
How did that happen - doesn't seem that long ago since they started Y12.
This is the thread where we support each other as our dcs revise and start their exams, finish off coursework, leave sixth form and make plans for what to do with the rest of their lives. This may involve going to uni or other alternatives.
Every Y13 parent is welcome to join in whether new to these threads or if you have been with us for a while - the more the merrier.

Thankyou No
Hopefully once they operate it should go!

Nettleskeins · 03/05/2018 13:08

15th for dtwins GSCES. Ds1 doesn't start till June 5/6th.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/05/2018 13:30

Oh fantasy I hope it can be sorted soon. Horrible to be in a sort of limbo with it at such a crucial time.

Dd has the viva for her EPQ today (postponed from last week due to medical emergency) and she thinks it went well. So that's another hurdle overcome

TheSecondOfHerName · 03/05/2018 15:10

Nettleskeins in summer 2020 I'll have one doing A-levels and two doing GCSEs. I'm not looking forward to it. It's bad enough this year, having one in Y11 and one in Y13.

HesMyLobster · 03/05/2018 15:48

DD says the French exam went "pretty well" Grin after all the "fine"s and "ok"s I remember from GCSEs I'm taking that as a very good result!

chocolateworshipper · 03/05/2018 15:54

puppy we need to have a word about your attendance ... Wink

lobster in teenage speak, I think that means "excellent"

It looks like DD is going to finish subject 3 quicker than subject 2. This will mean "settling" for a Distinction rather than a Distinction Star, but she just doesn't "get" the final assignment enough, and I have assured her that no perspective employer is ever going to say "If only you'd got three Distinction Stars, rather than two D*s and a Distinction"

TeresasGreen · 03/05/2018 17:11

On a brighter note DD just voted for the first time. I had to concentrate on breathing and not just blubbing it felt such an enormous moment. Grin

UrsulaPandress · 03/05/2018 18:24

Same here. Voting always makes me well up anyway so I had to really rein it in

raspberryrippleicecream · 03/05/2018 18:39

Here too.

DD's coursework has had a lot in it about women's rights over the last 100 years which added to the significance.

TheSecondOfHerName · 03/05/2018 18:44

Also DS1's first time voting. He is doing Politics A-level and has been interested in politics for some time, so he was excited about today even though it's not a general election.

TheSecondOfHerName · 03/05/2018 18:45

I was slightly tempted to take a photo of him outside the polling station holding his polling card, but managed to resist.

chocolateworshipper · 03/05/2018 18:51

I know that I while ago we filled in a form to say that DD would be eligible to vote in the next election, but do they need to register to vote in addition to that?

raspberryrippleicecream · 03/05/2018 19:10

Me too, Second

I don't think so chocolate. Not all areas had local elections today, but if you were able to vote and your DD wasn't then perhaps there was another form. Pretty sure I just added DD to our household electoral register letter.

FantasyAndHope · 03/05/2018 19:40

That’s good lobster
Dd voted in the latest GE and I was a bit emotional Grin

We think we may have figured out what dd has we think it could be hidradenitis suppurativa she fits the descriptions

marmiteloversunite · 03/05/2018 20:40

I too resisted taking a photo of DD with her first polling card. She was quite excited going but said "Is that it?" On the way out. Not sure what she was expecting?!

Nettleskeins · 03/05/2018 20:49

Ds1 voted, he was not sure who to vote for (3 votes) so he voted in the middle.

tbh ds2 had much more interest in the local election. I was embarassing even by my own standards because I got the Wards mixed up and was trying to vote for someone in the wrong ward, and asked why he had been left off the list.

Spanish went alright/so so for dd's GSCE, ds1 also handed in all his Music coursework and re-recorded his performance, very pleased with himself

Nettleskeins · 03/05/2018 20:51

Ds2 sat up all night during the Scottish Independence Election and had one day off his 100 percent attendance for the same reason at the last GE.

Ds1 unfortunately is just a feather for the winds that blow!

Nettleskeins · 03/05/2018 21:04

Second four children!! and uni exams too in 2020 remember!!!!

It feels like cheating to get two for the price of one through GSCEs though Wink I don't think I'd have it any other way..Smile I think it takes the pressure off considerably.

LoniceraJaponica · 03/05/2018 22:08

Oh no Fantasy. I hope the antibiotics work. Sending healing vibes to your DD.

I took DD to the GP this morning and she upped her anti anxiety meds dose.

DD is so shattered all the time and the GP advised her that if was having a bad day to not even do any revision. My worry is that if she has a series of bad days she won't do any revision at all then she will get more stressed by not doing any.

DD ended up asking OH to pick her up from school because she was afraid of falling asleep on the bus and ending up in town. Fortunately she has an inset day tomorrow and a bank holiday on Monday, so 4 days of not getting up early.

I have promised not to nag DD to revise but as she has made plans for this weekend I can't see that she has left much time to do any revision at all.

I am resigned to her just getting through her A levels and settling for something through clearing.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/05/2018 22:27

I got a photo of dd entering the polling station. She took it very seriously, studying local papers and leaflets.

I was really proud, I've been taking her there since a baby and there was my baby voting, probably into the same box as I used 18 years ago. Grin

UrsulaPandress · 03/05/2018 23:09

I was pleasantly surprised at how seriously dd took the whole voting thing. Reading stuff, nagging friends to vote. Despairing of the boyfriend and his family who have failed to update the electoral register since moving and hadn't noticed an election was occurring.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/05/2018 23:14

It's brilliant to see them so engaged.

Nettleskeins · 03/05/2018 23:24

our polling station is ds's old primary. I feel the years drop away whenever I vote -- I'm surrounded by ghosts (in a good sense)

Our local elections was being fought on planning/potholes and streetcleaning; I think when ds goes to his university town he will be a bit more aware of the impact of local councils and their policies, for now he is in a bit of a bubble living at home.

lonicera there are so many options for next year.

Nettleskeins · 03/05/2018 23:24

our local election not ions

HesMyLobster · 03/05/2018 23:47

DD was most annoyed that there was to be an election exactly 1 week before she turns 18!
Slightly less annoyed when I pointed out that our area wasn't affected so no election here anyway!

Tonight was her School Awards Evening. She won the Languages Prize, which I think she had an inkling she might.
But we were all in tears when she also won the overall academic excellence award. Very special moment. Smile
