Contacting GP without our consent?

My DD has been unwell and taken some time off of Sixth Form recently. School want evidence (we've supplied letters from doctor) but have contacted him since asking for further evidence and information on her illness. School gave us something we could sign to give them permission to contact doctors but we never signed it. Do they have the right to contact doctors asking for information without our permission?
Luckily doctor phoned DD straight away to inform her they'd been contacted and that he didn't have her consent to tell them anything - otherwise we wouldn't have known!

Blimey, that's pretty shit of them. They should certainly have checked the list of who has and hasn't given consent before they called the GP - good job he/she was on the ball.

I assume your dd is over 16 if she is in sixth form, in which case only she can give consent and not you her parents. You are absolutely right though, if the school/college are asking for information then the GP cannot supply it without consent.

In my experience, GPs will write anything (within reason). Was there anything lacking in the information you provided to the school from the GP initially?

They can ask all they want, your gp should not be sharing information without your written consent.
