Re-take Maths GCSE

My DD failed to secure a 4 in maths this year and I just wondered if anyone knows when she would retake it? I presumed it would be May/June next year. My DD has just been online for her new college and it mentions November this year. She is now panicking.

Some info on that thread. There is a resit opportunity in November, to give students who just missed it in June a chance to pass and gain access to college courses, and get it out of the way quickly. It's not compulsory. The next resit opportunity is next June when Y11 sit their GCSEs.

Thanks Noble, you are always so helpful!

She got 108/240. It would be good if she could pass in November but she hasn't don't any maths revision over the summer holidays. Do you think it would be a good idea to get a tutor?

Argh that is quite a tricky score! It's close enough to a 4 that it's worth a try, but you're right that not having done maths since June will mean her knowledge will have suffered a summer slide.

The exams are 2nd, 6th, 8th November (Edexcel) so it's early November but still nearly two months away. I think getting a tutor and really blitzing it would be good (if you can afford it) because even if she doesn't pass it will set her up well to study the rest of the year and hopefully nail it in June.

Results aren't out till January which is really annoying. Students usually continue to study maths till the results are out just to keep their knowledge levels up in case they need to keep going!

Thanks Noble. Have you heard of Tassomai the home learning programme and, if so, what are your views on it?

I've heard of it for science, but not for maths. I'm not sure I'd bother paying for something for maths when the free stuff is great (linked to on other thread).

Make sure you get your DD's maths papers back (free if Edexcel, and an analysis of how she performed against the national picture) so you can work out what she needs to focus on.

Ok, thanks. Do I contact her old maths teacher to get the paper back and an analysis?

The old school's exams officer would probably be the best person to contact, or the head of department. Individual teachers don't always have access.

Thank you

Hi OP my DS is in the same boat. We've been told by the sixth form that he's going to that if they achieved a 3 they can resit in November, but if they got a 2 they'll need to wait to June.

Thanks Violet

I took the Higher level GCSE and got a D (probably due to spending 2 years assing about at the back of the class with my friends), took it again in the November at Intermediate level and got the C that I wanted (didn't bother revising either, after looking at a couple of past papers, such was the difference in difficulty levels). Did she take it at Higher level as , if she'd be happy with getting a maximum of a 5 grade, it might be easier to achieve by resitting it at Foundation level.

She took the foundation paper Hooble

Noble, hope you pick this message up. Well DD has started her retake maths at college and, as I envisaged, the quality of teaching is pretty poor. Can you recommend some good online revision websites? I think she had method maths at school which was free but presume I would have to pay now. We have a meeting the week after next at college and so they may well recommend something but I do value your opinion. 🙂
