History and social anthropology

I've been doing a bit of looking into Uni courses that may suit my going into year 11 son. Ages away I know but I was hoping that some goals might motivate him!

He loves history and the human geography part of geography. He is not particularly academic and I am concerned about his GCSEs. He is bright but is dyslexic and has focus issues. Anyway hopefully when he can concentrate on just 3 subjects for A level his marks will improve! He is doing 9 GCSEs.

So just wondered about options for him. Social anthropology sounds right up his street and he was excited to hear he could study this with history at Unin(if he gets the grades)

Anyone with any experience of these subjects? Especially for a less than super academic child. Is there Access courses he could do if he doesn't get the grades?

Thanks for any wisdom and/or experience!

History is a very academic subject I'm not sure about social anthropology but there isn't much practical on a history course, lots of reading academic books and writes says so lots of critical thinking guides. I wouldnt recommend it for someone who struggles academically I'd consider something more practical.

Thanks. It's just he really loves History - the only subject he gets excited about. He's very knowledgeable and engaged but finds putting ideas down on paper a challenge.

I did social anthropology as part of a Bachelors in social sciences degree. I can definitely recommend it from being a fascinating subject. I also loved history at GCE stage. BUT, at whatever level, they are pretty academic subjects - essays etc. My DD has dyslexia and scraped through her GCSEs to be honest, but she's just got her AS grades after one year of A level study in film studies, media studies and combined English and got BCC. Pretty respectable! She struggles with purely academic subjects and loved the practical side of two of her A levels. I'd advise thinking as widely as possible about options including BTECs because there's lots of choice and your DS can get great UCAS points via this route too. Good luck to him 👍🏻
