Hopefully this thread will appear on TIO! Grin No need to use it til our old thread is done, but at least we have it for when we are ready.

My DD got an offer today. 5th choice and not what she wants (medicine) but as she says 'it's nice to be loved'. Now the llooooonnng wait for medicine results

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/10/2017 07:40

Well done to your dd Mums :) at least she knows she has an ultimate back up. When will she find out the results of her medicine applications?

OP posts:
mumsneedwine · 10/10/2017 07:48

Not til late November at the earliest and then it's only to know if she's got any interviews. It's a brutal process. Think she's having a little dream of it being as easy as getting this offer !

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/10/2017 11:34

It does sound very tough - like Oxbridge, but fourfold!

UrsulaPandress · 10/10/2017 13:06

So all those of you whose offspring have submited, are they all applying to Oxbridge or for Medicine/Dentistry? There doesn't appear to be any sense of urgency from DD or her school with regards to submitting her UCAS form. I think we will definitely be close to the deadline...............

Icouldbeknitting · 10/10/2017 13:15

Ursula I have the college timetable in front of me, ours are supposed to have their PS with their tutor by the end of this week and the internal deadline for general UCAS applications is mid November. My suspicion is that this is because college wants it nailed down before they start with mock exams. It goes on to say that it can take two weeks from the student submitting the form to it going off so they shouldn't leave it until the last minute. I would take a wild guess that there are large numbers each year that stir themselves just before the end of term.

marmiteloversunite · 10/10/2017 13:20

My DD is trying for Oxbridge but with the knowledge that it probably won't happen. Think her sixth form staff are concentrating on Oxbridge/Medicine/Conservatoire students first and once they are done they will help others finish applications in November. Don't think they will leave it til the January deadline.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/10/2017 13:22

dd has applied to Oxbridge.

Ursula
We submitted early to get it out of the way and because ds's fee status may take a while to be determined. There are about 5 students from his school applying to the UK and the ones applying for medicine have submitted. Those whose fee status is clear ie definitely international fees have not submitted their forms yet and school is not chasing them at the moment.

Littledrummergirl · 10/10/2017 13:26

The Veterinarian seems very similar to medicine. Deadline 15/10 then the wait for interviews, extra questionnaires etc. Unlike medicine their doesn't seem to be any special threads for it so you lot are stuck with me. Grin
Ds1 has formed his own support group with other vet applicants and that has been very helpful in ironing out kinks.

UrsulaPandress · 10/10/2017 13:57

Good luck with vet application.

HesMyLobster · 10/10/2017 15:45

Good Luck to your DS Drummer, DD has a friend applying for vet and I know from talking to her mum it’s a huge amount of work and then a long anxious wait. Gin for you!

And mumsneedwine, Winefor you, and think you’ll be needing more than just wine! Well done to your DD for her back up offer, at least that was nice and fast.

DD has applied to Oxford Ursula.

Like Kitten said, it’s going to be hard waiting until November to hear if they invite her to interview, but at least for us that’s only one of her applications, not 4 of them!

marmiteloversunite · 10/10/2017 16:44

Lobster so do Oxford send out interview invites in November and do they let you know then if you haven't got an interview?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/10/2017 16:54

Cambridge send invitations out for interview mid to late November, with interviews the first half of December. So dd will prepare for it as though she does have one.
They get offers early Jan.

Thanks all. The deed is done, application sent and his school are pretty on the ball so I expect they will add their bit soon.
I'm certainly a lot happier now it's done and ds1 is a lot calmer- he has even smiled!
Let the wait begin. Grin

HesMyLobster · 10/10/2017 17:52

Oxford has the same time line as Cambridge. Invitation to interview end of November, with the interviews first 2 weeks in December.
Aptitude tests are beginning of November, and I assume they use the results of those to decide who they’ll interview - around half of applicants I think.
I have no idea if/how they let dc know if they haven’t got an interview - probably just an update on track. Brutal. Confused

HesMyLobster · 10/10/2017 17:53

Well Done Drummer’s DS. Everything crossed 🤞

TheSecondOfHerName · 11/10/2017 18:39

Well done to all those who have received offers, and fingers crossed for those who are waiting.

Question unrelated to UCAS: when your Y13 has friends round for a gathering (mostly 17 year olds with a couple of 18 year olds), do you provide some beer/cider, and if so, how many bottles per guest?

catslife · 11/10/2017 18:49

I think that depends on the size of the bottles TheSecond and if any of the group will be driving!

chocolateworshipper · 11/10/2017 19:16

TheSecond
just a word of warning about supplying alcohol to under-18s. I was told by a police officer that adults that supply alcohol for a party, knowing that there will be under-18s there, could be charged (I can't remember what offence he said it was). I buy some cans of cider (fairly low alcohol) every now again with my Tesco delivery, on the basis that if DD has friends round, I know that they are likely to drink them, but I can honestly state that I didn't buy the alcohol for the purpose of being drunk by 17-year-olds. Hope that makes sense.

catslife · 11/10/2017 19:57

You can also buy ready mixed shandy and low alcohol beer as well.
The word party wasn't mentioned, but chocolate that's why dds 18th is being held at a local restaurant so that only those over 18 can buy alcoholic drinks (should they wish to).

TheSecondOfHerName · 11/10/2017 22:26

chocolate that's a good idea. We have a beer drawer in the fridge anyway, which I periodically remember to restock.

TheSecondOfHerName · 11/10/2017 22:29

Definitely not a party, he is just having a few friends over.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/10/2017 22:59

That's what they all say TheSecond Wink Grin
