MrsAD, yours isn't the only dd who loves Bletchley Grin There was some upset this year that they not allow under 18s in unaccompanied and dd wanted to get the train there by herself for a day trip.

Welcome thisagain :) I'd be really cautious with the new reformed A Levels, especially with such unrelated subjects. A friends dd chose similar last year including music and had to drop one and she has a grade 8 in one of her instruments.

dd is trying to fit too much in by far at the moment and I had to put my foot down today and insist that she completely had today off. I'm a bit worried about her still.

I'm glad you said that raspberry. We're going to The book of Mormon and are still deciding on the other one, there are so many dd wants to see. She fancied Harry Potter, but it's beyond my budget so negotiations are going on about the second show. We've both seen Wicked, the lion king and the woman in black, so not those. Not really sure what else is on, good, and within budget, lol.

If you are going to be in London MrsAD maybe there would be a suitable talk at the RI that she would enjoy?

We went to Bletchley park this summer. My dc all really enjoyed it. I have to say I was all overcome and had a moment while I was there. It was fantastic.

MsAwesomeDragon · 24/09/2017 20:10

Oh, I'm so pleased that so many of you are recommending bletchley park!! Sounds like it's a fantastic day out. Kitten that was a great idea about looking at the ri, but unfortunately the only talk going on while we're there clashes with the tickets I've already booked for the book of Mormon. Any other recommendations for interesting things to do with a geeky 18yo in London? You lot are brilliant for ideas.

Dd is also going to register to do the national cipher challenge organised by Southampton university every year. It starts on 5th October and is really good. You get 2 coded messages each week, released on a Thursday, and submit your solutions to be in with the chance of a prize (based on how quick and accurate you are). It's fab for anyone interested in maths/computing, really gets your brain working. Maybe don't suggest it to anyone who is already working too hard though Wink

raspberryrippleicecream · 24/09/2017 20:12

Book of Mormon was great. I did sit with my sister between DD and me though! We went as a post GCSE treat.

DS is taking A level music, his will be the first year to sit the new linear music exam in 2018. How easy is to to get an A - no idea, sorry. I couldn't even tell you what they are doing or how much work is involved. I do know that rather like english literature they have a book of pieces that they compare and contrast except obviously it's a book of scores rather than poems. (cough£38cough)

There were 30 odd in music on the induction days, five started the course and now they are down to four.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/09/2017 21:30

the science museum has a small new maths gallery but also a really cool communications gallery. Imperial do a few talks but I've not been to one of those.

What about one of the escape rooms? I can pm you one we've enjoyed.

I'd like to go on this: www.postalmuseum.org/discover/attractions/mail-rail-ride/

DD's favourite place in London is the British Museum. I ended up reading a book outside as she was there for hours each day.

MsAd re shows, we enjoyed Matilda. And always Les Miserables. (Cheapish seats in the Upper Circle).

DD has bought her own ticket for Hamilton in February, beyond my budget!

MsAwesomeDragon · 24/09/2017 22:58

Ooh, an escape room sounds good, please do pm me about one of those. And I love the look of that mail train but I don't think it's dd's thing. I enjoyed Matilda, and dd hasn't seen it, but I saw it on a school trip last year and am setting it again on the same school trip this year as well, so I don't want to see it again. Les miserables may be a goer, I'll see what dd thinks. And the British museum is somewhere I've been before, but if forgotten about it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/09/2017 07:03

I've sent you a pm :)

Thanks kitten, I'll look into booking that for us.

I just need to get through to Friday. DS has to apply for his vocational course this week, it's a weird one so he's not getting much support from college. He showed me his application yesterday (under duress) and his PS equivalent is ok. It could do with reshaping and deletion of a zillion commas but it is very definitely his. The rest of the form Is Not Complete. There are so many fields that are still blank, little things such as name and address of referee, they seem to be quite irrelevant. Strange that they are mandatory though.

Arrrggghhh

spababe · 25/09/2017 10:15

There are Harry Potter and Jack the Ripper themed walks in London not too expensive. The HP one shows you the locations where they filmed.

For all Bletchley visitors, the National Computer Museum is next door and that is well worth a visit for those interested in computers.

voilets · 25/09/2017 17:55

dear chocolate and lobster, I hear you but it takes ages to get better!
DS at uni ( was home until yesterday for summer) ranted because I asked him to hoover more than the front room after being at work all day and he had been playing games on a computer! The cheek of it.

He's a lovely young man but so not getting - have to pull weight as an adult and as we're paying for a lot of uni!

Oh no voilets! I was hoping that after a year living away from home she come back all appreciative and grateful and desperate to help . . . Bubble burst! Wink

DD submitted her UCAS form last week but school haven't added all the references etc yet. She asked her form tutor about it today and apparently could tell from the vague and slightly shifty answer that she hasn't even started her reference yetHmmConfused!

Parents evening tomorrow though, so perhaps they're waiting until after that.

Rationally we both know it's completely fine and there's really no rush, but I I know how she feels when she says she just wants it "done and gone" so she can draw a line under it and focus on other things for a while.

One of which being the school production. Which she decided long ago that she wasn't going to be involved with this year. Which she didn't go to the preliminary meetings or auditions for. But has somehow managed to come home today as co-director and choreographer of HmmGrin

ohyou
No they haven’t but her crease of her eyelid isn’t going down like her other side her eye is a real mess apology for the late reply
chocolate
I hear you although I suspect my dd gets a tiny bit of her ungratefulness from me but I’m not as bad as her

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/09/2017 06:55

It can really help Fantasy - she should ask if it is appropriate in her case.

Careers appointment for dd was postponed and has been rescheduled for this week. Will hopefully help with her decision making post-18.
Anyone know how much it costs to resit an old-style AS module as this has been suggested to boost her grades?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/09/2017 12:05

would college not pay for that Catslife? aqa entry fees p38 maths as units are about £18 each.

OP posts:
catslife · 28/09/2017 19:27

Thanks kitten it happens to be an AQA exam so that's very useful (not Maths though).
I have no idea if the college will pay for the resit or not. I know dds former school expected parents to pay, but can't find this info on the college website. I used to think the school website was bad for finding information but the college one is even worse...
