5 A levels

Dd is in year 13 and doing English/History/Geology A levels. She's been happy with her choices and is predicted to do well.
She's had a bit of a change of heart along the way and now wishes she'd done Biology and Chemistry. Would it be unreasonable to do another two years at sixth form college? She'd been planning a gap year but is prepared to plough on with two further A levels.
Does anyone else have a dc who has done this?

I think you would need to check she would get funding.

My understanding is that she wouldn't as she will already be educated to a level 3 (A level) standard.

If you are happy/able to pay for the course it won't be a problem.

I think this is probably true but I'm sure they're able to stay on until they're 19.
Dd will speak to her tutor this week and see what he says. I've googled around a bit and it seems discretionary in various colleges.

They normally get funded until 19 if thats how long it takes them to finish their course, I'm not sure she would get funded until 19 for extra A levels.

I can't help thinking that this must happen a lot - students deciding on a different career path. What are their choices? I'm not in a position to fund further study but she currently gets EMA so I wonder whether that makes any difference?

I think the problem she/you will have is that she will be qualified to a level 3. Education is free until 19 to allow those who need an extra year to achieve a level 3.

What does she want to do after getting the science A'levals?
Because the alternative is to do a science foundation year at university.

hawleybits · 02/05/2017 21:12

Dd is interested in forensic science but realises it's a popular choice. On further investigation, it seems that with the geology A level she will already have, it would be possible to do a science foundation year. This might be a better option for her.

This happened to a girl on my access course. She wanted to apply for nursing after not doing science. She had to pay the 1k for the access course.. had an interview and got an unconditional offer so never actually completed.

She said it was the most expensive interview of her life. But couldnt even get an interview with similar A levels to your dc
