AS result doesn't correlate with expected result, not sure of options for A2 now.

A bit of background: DD has taken 4 AS exams, she's expected to drop her worst one and continue with the other three at A2 level. DD's reports have indicated her working at a C/D level with a projected grade of B/C at A2 level for all four subjects. One of her teachers has been causing problems, and every student in that class has either dropped the subject or intends to drop the subject, DD included. I am supporting her decision.

Now the problem: we just got home from holiday and DD has only just opened her results. She has got C,C,D,U - with U being in what she considered her strongest subject. This means she cannot take the A2 in that subject and will be required by the school to continue with the other three.

DD was sure she had done well in the failed exam, and it doesn't make sense for her to get a U considering her report grades. She is devastated. I suggested that she could perhaps re-take Year 12 in that subject, but she said the school had made it clear before the holiday that this would not be an option.

Has anyone had this situation? I'm not sure what her options are at this point. DD has rung the school and left a message and we are waiting to hear from them, but she is understandably really upset.

The U could be done to being over confident or your dd having a really bad day.

You can ask for a script for the exam but it will need paying for (£12 ish the last time one was done here it may have changed)

What "trouble" has the teacher being causing and which result was the exam for that subject. It maybe that "trouble" means being harsh so that only those that want to do the subject stay with it.

Has everyone done badly in the subject she got a u in?
If everyone is planing on dropping the other subject, will they run it as an a level for one student?
If it really is that much of an unexpected result, I'd talk to school about continuing it and asking for a remark.

The 'trouble' teacher was in a subject DD did ok in. The teacher wasn't harsh, she was unreasonable - we had meetings with the head teacher, who said they had had several problems with this teacher, and were holding meetings with the head of the department involved to try to resolve the issue. DD dropped that subject immediately after her AS exam. It's quite telling that the only Y13 students in her class last year were the ones who had failed a different exam at AS and had no choice but to continue with this class.

I've e-mailed the head now so am waiting for a reply, I'm not sure how much they are manned over the holiday.

I'll ask about getting the script for the failed exam, that would be good to see exactly what DD did wrong and will give us a better idea of where to go from here. We have discussed possibly doing the A-level in that subject through Distance Learning.

We're in a very similar position. In her best subject DD has an A in one paper and a U in the other. We have paid for a remark and for the paper to be returned. We have been in to see the sixth form head and he has looked at results across the cohort etc which was helpful. He gave us about an hour and half of his time which was greatly appreciated. Incidentally there were other pupils in school seeing other staff, so you might find you get a response in the holidays. DD wants to do this subject at university so we are hoping there has been some kind of mistake as this has always been her strongest subject and she loves it. Still waiting for the results of the remark...

Tranquility Thanks for that, very helpful to know the procedure - we're two weeks behind everyone as we were on holiday on results day (bad planning on my part, I'm afraid - DD has made it Very Clear we are to be home all of August next year!).

I've managed to speak to the Head, who has looked over DD's reports and is also very surprised. She's going to speak to DD's teachers in this subject (there are two) and she also said about getting the exam re-marked and she is going to look at results of others who have taken it. It's a tremendous relief to know that she thinks something's gone wrong somewhere!
