Would this be a good mix of A Levels and where to take it after that?

DS has decided he will be going to the local sixth form college after GCSEs next year.

At present his A Level preferences are English, Latin, Philosophy and Economics. He loves History too but thinks he will take a rain check on it at that stage.

So if he wants to go to Uni, would a PPE degree be a good idea or is the world flooded with these graduates and/or is it out of fashion now?

The Politics element would definitely work with his historical interests and his English is good enough to lead to journalism so I'm quite pleased with the sound of his plans at the moment. But am I deluded?!

Can you do Latin at A level? Isn't it classical civilisation? Can he throw Maths in - it's a very good fit with Economics and other social sciences.

We are doing the same for my DS at the moment, the current (and maybe final) list is Biology, Psychology, Sociology and Philosophy but he is not sure if that would give him a wide choice of degree course options. He currently wants to do psychology at university but he's not certain.

You need at least two facilitating subjects - Psychology, Sociology and Philosophy etc are not these. Check with universities offering courses that your DC are interested in to see which subjects they will accept.

Informed choices

Thanks, just looked at that. Maybe I will suggest English literature as that was one possible option instead of philosophy.

Blot

Some universities don't like psychology A Level for psychology degrees - best to check.

Thanks. We've got a list of the degree courses in psychology and later armed with a large glass of wine I am going to get DS to say which one he likes the look of and then -muggins-- me will look at what is needed.
The things we do for our children....surely he should be doing this for himself but he has pleaded revision for mocks next month.

You don't need two facilitating subjects at all.

You just need to be aware that if he wants to do particular degrees, he may be restricted by not having particular A levels.

So, if there's a chance he wants to do a History degree, he needs to do history A level really.

However, for a PPE degree, there are no officially required A levels on informed choices. History / politics / philosophy are all relevant.

I'd sit down and look at his A level choices and think about what he can do with them, and then think about potential degrees and see whether they marry up.

titchy Latin and Class civ are two different subjects. You can indeed do Latin A level but few places offer it these days

We have just borrowed a copy of the Which guide to A levels and that has been quite useful.
We're not bothering with two facilitating subjects after having looked up admissions requirements for 50 degree courses and spoken to a couple of people who support applications to university for 6th form colleges.
