Looking for a degree that will help me to break into this field? (Media related) To degree or not degree?

Hi,

After some advice as I am so unsure what to do?

I am desperate for a career in radio and television, I would love to work in production. My previous career (If you could call it a career) had some ties to media and I just really enjoy that whole industry.

I currently volunteer on two radio stations (community and hospital) I produce and present my own shows and I absolutely love it. I am seeking voluntary work in television production but having no luck up to now unfortunately. It's becoming so frustrating as I am desperate to take that next step and start to build a career for myself in both radio and television production. I don't really know what else to do?

I have spoken to a few people in the radio world and they seem to think that experience will count for more than any degree and that it could be a waste of time to go to Uni. Bare in mind, I want to present on radio if possible, as well as produce. In terms of television production I am not sure if this is also the case that experience is more important? I've done bits and bobs of presenting on the internet and absolutely loved it too, so presenting in television is also something that would interest me (I actaully have a showreel of my past work) but i'm aware that this is probably extremely difficult to break in to.

Any ideas if there's a degree I could do that would help me to break into the media in terms of production and perhaps broadcasting? Or am I better off getting as much experience as I can under my belt and trying to get in that way? Bare in mind i'm turning 30 this year and TTC baby number 2 (final baby, no more after this!) If it's relevant I have decent family support and an amazing partner that is behind me 100% (His opinion is that I keep going with my voluntary stuff and not bother with Uni) Just worried that time is ticking and my age might go against me in this field?

Thanks in advance.

Apprenticeships? Or do they stop at a certain age? BBC radio, I think, were advertising around the country up until recently.

I would imagine networking and lots of luck (due to how few opportunities there are to do that exact job) would be an important factor.

I don't know anything about relevant degrees but I expect they vary considerably in quality depending on the Univeristy delivering them.
