How does the registration process work? and wondering how long does it take?
ONly just started looking into this as we have thought about it for a while! DO u register with the council first then decide if u want to use private agencies or not? Also I was wondering how it works but currently we live in 3 bed hse but in order for me to foster we will move to 5bed hse.Can I start the registration process now or do I have to be in bigger hse first? Sorry about all the questions

Contact your local authority, neighbouring local authorities (council) and any local private agencies you have local to you. See which of them give you the best response and which are most helpful. If you can, speak to some local fostercarers and get the low down from them.

You'll have to be approved by just one agency, whether that's a local authority or an independent. The process can take around six months, sometimes more. I moved during the approval process but they may want you to move first - ask and see what they say.

How it works is that you will have a social worker visit you over several weeks to carry out an assessment. This will be in depth, and will cover your own experiences of being parented as well as being parents. They will want lots of references, clear police checks for every adult living in the house, they will contact ex partners too if relevant. There is also training and a preparation to foster course, some places want you to do that first, others do it during the process.

Part of the assessment will be looking at the type of child you feel you could foster - and the type of fostering you could do . Short term, long term, emergency, respite, children with disabilities, children with behavioural problems, mother and baby, young children, teens, all that sort of thing.

It is intense and can be offputting. But it is designed to keep the fostered children safe.

I hope you get a good response

We have started the process of being approved as foster carers and we initially approached our local council about a year ago. We missed one preparation course and are just finishing our course - we will probably start the home study process in a month or two and it is supposed to take about 2-4 months depending on how close together you can fit in visits. You are then taken to "panel" which as I understand it can take a few months.

If it all fitted together perfectly it might take 4-6 months but it is likely to take longer.

thank u for that = that is all very interesting. Was wondering is all the courses free too? Still looking into it before we make a final decision.
Any foster parents out there that can pass there verdict on being foster parents would be very helpful indeed,
