Fostering

Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on fostering.

What checks do SWs/police make before placing unaccompanied asylum seeking minors with FCs?

In light of today's Times story about an asylum seeking man from Afghanistan who stabbed a man to death and was subsequently found to have murdered two others in Serbia I ask the question above.

This man was fostered by a family having pretended he was 16 when he was actually 20. The family were very worried about him and felt he was disturbed and that he carried a knife. Surely you'd think they might have told him to leave once they found him with a knife?

One has to ask: what checks do SWs do before placing these young people with foster carers?

From what I have read, I suspect none. As asylum seekers are advised by their smugglers to get rid of all ID before entry into the UK (as described by Waheed Arian in his book, 'In the Wars..') and age testing is not encouraged by SWs/councils, foster carers will inevitably be fostering young people who are a lot older than they say they are. That doesn't personally bother me as I feel - judging by my own kids, even a 20 year old needs support.

However, the absence of police checks for a violent background is potentially terrifying.

One of those was an offence committed in Cardiff. And clearly they are being reported, despite previous poster saying they weren’t.

Those prison terms are a joke though, and I’ve no idea why their sentences are reduced because they are foreign nationals.

Unfortunately foster carers aren't always given the background to ANY foster children, as social workers just want to find them a placement.

It's only later that a drip feed can happen!

This is concerning ; www.infomigrants.net/en/post/42734/false-migrant-age-claims-skyrocketing-in-uk

Also a concern is the info that isn’t passed over to carers but is known and should be just from basic common or garden incompetence/someone being off sick/failed handover/any number of things

While I agree with poster above about drip feeding information you are usually informed about some info ( if known). If you decide that the child would not fit in with your family or if you think you do not have enough experience you can refuse to accept the child.
All children in care are the responsibility of their LA.
Children can be removed from their area if involved i county lines, a child who has a history of abusing should not be placed in a family where this could happen again, some children require a lot of medical input or help with their mental health so they may be placed with carers who are trained and able to support them. Young people who require high levels of support should not be placed in a busy family.
Some children cannot for whatever reason cannot be placed with foster carers so residential is deemed a better outcome for them.
So yes all children/ young people need to be cared for but there are different types of care that can be provided for them.
