Our panel date is coming up soon and starting to feel slightly nervous. Wondered if anyone could share their experiences please?

You'll be fine!

Ours was OK - they were friendly, just wanted to ask a few questions, and were not looking to trip us up or make us nervous.
What age are you hoping to be approved for?

TulipsfromAmsterdam · 25/01/2012 13:55

Thanks for reply. We are hoping to be approved for age 0-2years.

Hello

We were approved nearly a year ago and to be honest with you I found the panel quite intimidating (my knees were actually knocking!) but our ssw was there to support us. They ask you various questions (there were about ten people on our panel, but they were all quite professional and polite!

Looking back I probably worried about it too much, I am sure you will be fine and your ssw would not be taking you to panel of she had any doubts about you!

Let us know how you get on-I am also approved for 0-2 and have loved (nearly!) every minute of it x

Hi Tulips - I have chaired numerous fostering panels (was a sw and tm mgr for 23 years with a LA) now retired. You have had good advice, and panel members know that some applicants are nervous (far better than being too cocky I can tell you) As has already been said, no one is trying to trip you up. If the assessment has been properly done there shouldn't be any problems. If there was anything I thought was missing from a Form F I would get hold of the sw first and ask him/her for more info/clarification, so that applicants were not asked about this at panel.

It should really be a discussion but it does seem like a Q and A session. As you will know the panel is multi disciplinary so before the aplicants come in, it is decided who wil take up a particular issue with you e.g. re health/education etc. The worst thing is going into a room with so may strangers and I was always trying to reduce the numbers, but it wasn't possible as the govt laid down laws about panels to ensure that they were multi disciplinary. We had a HV who used to fall asleep in panels and I had to kindly suggest that maybe we should replace her - she was quite stroppy about it and denied falling asleep, but the gently snoring and dropping of her head on her chest suggested otherwise!

If there is something you don't understand (we used to have a sw on the panel who had a peculiar voice and was not easy to understand) and carers used to get embarrassed cus they didn't know what he was on about. I used to say something like "I think X means...................."

Finally don't forget that foster carers are like gold dust to LAs struggling with very scarce supply of carers and high demands for children needing placement.

I am sure you will be fine!

PS some panel members are a bit timid and say "Oh can someone else ask that".............but I felt if they were on the panel they must be prepared to raise relevant issues. The first Q is usually about the training course and how you found it - were there any surprises - things that you haven't thought of - things that worried you. Don't be worried about saying there were issues you hadn't thought of before or things that worried you (like allegations against carers) to be honest I was always a bit concerned about the ones who said "Oh no it was fine - nothing bothered us" ...........hmmm!

Let us know how it goes, oh and of course your link worker will be there to "protect" you - oh yes, take a flask as panels are almost always running late (30 mins on average but could be longer)

Hello

Although I have been reading these boards for a while, I have just registered and this is my first post. My husband and i were approved (or at least recommended for approval) on Monday :-) I can honestly say that I was probably more nervous than I have ever been but it was absolutely fine the panel members made us feel very much at ease (all 12 of them), they were lovely. Mind you, we were expecting 3 or 4 questions but we got 9! However, they were all straightforward and relevant, so please don't worry, you will be fine. Just be yourself, be honest and just like myself, and I'm sure, many others, you will be wondering what all the worry was about. Just twiddling my thumbs now waiting for our first placement, I jump a mile every time the phone rings!

Good luck x

We had video conferencing which i found quite intimidating but it was a lot easier than i expected. And so much quicker. Best of luck

Hi Tulips
We were both really nervous, but the panel were really friendly and put us at our ease.

Sure you'll be fine Smile

Thanks for all the reassuring messages detailing experiences - all helpful and good to know most people feel the same. Also thanks NanaNina for showing a different perspective - hope our panel will be full of people like you :)
Congrats to those recently approved, am hoping I will be back here soon saying it was absolutely fine too.
