just wondering - those who foster school aged kids, do they usually go to your local school or do you have to take them to the school they went to befroe they came to you? If it was a distance away e.g. 15 miles or so - would you get milage? I'm guessing it would depend on whether they were short term or long term too?
thanks - got SW from LA coming for an initial visit, so will ask her, but wondered what others experiences were?
Thanks

Social care would pay for transport if the school was not local and there were no plans to change schools ( short term/emergency fostering).

Others will obviously go to the school local to their foster carers, they will get the first priority for places at any state school. HTH Smile

A mixed bag really. It depends on the Care Plan - whether child is to be returned to parents or move on to long term foster care or stay with you long term.

I have had children who have moved to our local school because SS do not want bio parents knowing where children are. I have had children who have not moved schools until they are in their "forever" homes. I transport the child I have in placement now 10 miles to school every day. that is 40 miles per day. I do not get mileage allowance as this is considered to be within catchment area Confused. Our LA covers a huge area.

If the child is with you before he starts school however he will be allocated a place at your local school - or any school where your own children attend.

long term you can usually move them school

for some children this is really good as they often need a new start due to behaviour down to the abuse or neglet they have suffred and i find most school age children i have that come from parents are in a sink school thats not very good and for me as well as getting good parentingwhen they come and stay with me i am dertrmined they get a outsatnding eduction

also i cant stand to leave a child in a school were their abuse went un noticed for so long it says a lot about a school if a child only attened six weeks out of a year was dirty and hungry every day but it took the next dooe nabiour to inform ss that somthing wasnt right

if a child starts with you but has no school but will be returned home try and get them in a really good school as they will quickly spot weather things are going down hill when child returns home as they will be alot hotter on attendce, apperince genral bahaviour of the child compared to a not so good school.

BUT OF COURSE FOR SOME CHILDREN IT WILL BE THE ONLY CONSISANT THING IN THEIR LIFE.

BUT LAC HAVE PRIORTY IN ALL SCHOOLS SO REALLY THE FACT WITH SS SUPPORT YOU CAN USUALLY GET THEM IN TO ANY SCHOOL IN THE LA.

One thing i would say please resist the eargue to place them in the same school as your lo its about the right school for the foster child not the easy school for school run
