God Save the Quen is played, what do you do?

Do you bite your nails?
Do you fidget about from one leg to the other?
Do you chat to your mates?

Just curious really, as there was a parade/dedication thing last night. I took the Dses along to watch the band.
Lots of SNCO on parade. Anyway, "the Queen" started playing and I watched a very old and frail WW2 spitfire pilot struggle to his feet from his wheelchair to stand , while behind him junior Officers bit their nails, chatted to their friends etc.
DS2 asked me why the old man was standing so I told him. Ds said "but he flew Spitfires during the war, he did his bit he shouldn't have to stand"
DS2 was right he shouldn't have had to stand, and even if those junior officers felt no respect for the national anthem or the Quen then they should have felt a hell of a lot of respect for the old gent in the wheelchair - if he made the effort to stand then so should they

Even if dh is not in uniform, he will stand to attention when it is played. Ds does not talk during it, and I stand straight and sing it if appropriate.

DH going to a military handover ceremony next week where the only anthem being played is the EU one, for which they all have to salute. I object to that.

I am an 'ordinary' citizen (ex forces brat)and I stand for the National Anthem and so do my children. I would have been absolutly discusted with them and would have said so to thier commanding officer. They are a disgrace. Even if they didn't stand then quietly sitting to attention should be the norm.

luciemule · 21/05/2010 12:46

I often like to go against protocol and certainly don't do the Lord's Prayer, however, I (and the children) would stand for the national anthem at that sort of offical do. I would sing some of the words as I'm not sure I know them all!
If they had been DHs soldiers, they would have got a good earful and duties probably for behaving like the guys you describe!

Lexilicious · 21/05/2010 13:07

Stand to attention. Oafs.

One should also stand for whatever the Corps march is.

nickschick · 21/05/2010 13:09

Dh is ex forces as is FIL and always stand for the anthem as do ds1,2&3 and myself.

Saltire · 21/05/2010 14:58

Dh has emailed the Station commander to express his annoyance,a nd I saw the SWO this morning (he organised the parade) and told him how disgusted I was, and said what DS2 had said.

Good for him and you. I am glad you both didn't let it slide.

frakkit · 23/05/2010 17:48

Absolutely not! I wouldn't even dream of doing that as a civvy non-citizen when the French anthem is played, let alone if I were uniformed and it were my own. It's just not on!

I often whinge about the sheer lack of respect the British in general have for our national anthem. You only have to watch sporting events to see that. Other countries stand with their hands on the hearts - our players shuffle around and can't wait for it to be over.

Good on you for saying something. Disgraceful example.
