All forces members paid a bit less tax, nothing crazy but i'm sure even 5% less would make a difference to a lot of us!

Of course it will never happen but i do think it's a good idea, might help the retention issues as well.

Maybe we should start a petition!

Serving personnel do pay a little less tax when on ops - that's what the op bounty is for. The council tax payment is subsidised as well, so that we're not disadvantaged by moving around.

Also, if we're posted in this country and using the services provided, then we should pay the same tax as everyone else.

luciemule · 25/03/2010 11:40

and if on overseas tour, you get tax allowance for products bought and cheaper fuel etc.

jcscot · 25/03/2010 11:45

I do think the Forces get a raw deal in some ways but I don't see why we should pay less tax compared to other professions.

it's an interesting idea wrt retention though - have spent many an hour discussing this topic as an ex-recruiter!

it depends if you think people are in it for the money... which might be the case in recession, but isn't generally the norm. nothing conclusive has ever been reached as to why exactly people are in it lol!

the tax/ ops thing was v popular lol - but don't see queues forming as a result! (notwithstanding the fact there are always those begging for nice long saudi postings purely for the money lol. a friend of mine bought his house outright after 3 years )

some people are motivated by the money (save as you starve ) but i'm not sure it would work as a retention initiative tbh.

sorry!

I don't think CILOCT is subsidised - ours is £141 per month over 12 months which is akin to the CTAX on my band E property in Cornwall for 09/10, and for 10/11 it will be £1760.79 for the Cornish place. Looking at the AFPRB report CILOCT was going up as well, so it's middle for diddle really.

luciemule · 25/03/2010 16:54

I thought CILOT was just a different way of it being paid through the forces but the amount was the same as CTax. Or does it include water rates??? We don't pay for water do we? (well not as a separate payment anyway).

MrsTicklemouseWantsBunnyEars · 25/03/2010 17:31

Obviously not a good idea then!

have had no experience of ops bounty, DH only joined last year, at the grand old age of 28, and aside from training/exercise hasn't been away properly! I suppose this does has something to do with me feeling hard done by, we have taken a 40% pay cut for DH to "fulfill his dream"

I thought CILOCT was just a different way of paying it too, ours is the same as we paid on our previous rented ex council house, which was a similar size/style but different part of the country

i hope we don't pay water luciemule cos we never have!

jcscot · 25/03/2010 17:45

Sorry - I understood CILOCT was subsidised when, in fact, it's standardised so that we're not penalised if we move into an "expensive" council area.

My mistake.

madwomanintheattic · 25/03/2010 18:06

mrst - like i said - recruitment and retention not usually influenced by money

living the dream, eh?
