Hi

Sorry for invading your threads, but can anyone tell me if there is a magazine that is published soley for the army, navy etc?

I have just set up my new company and I think it is something that may interrest people who work in the forces as well as their families, but not sure how to reach them.

Thanks

Yes there are various publications for each service plus most camps produce some kind of publication periodically.

What were you planning to include in your publication? Would it be a national thing?

luciemule · 24/02/2010 19:00

Yep - it's called the AFF here

The navy and RAF have their own - easy to find if you google.
A magazine is delivered to every forces quarter usually or you can contact them online.

There's also Soldier Magazine - widely available in newsagents and on camp.

Well what I would like to do is place an advertisement, I handmake silver fingerprint jewellery, which does what its says on the tin really. You can have your child or loved ones fingerprint as well as names etc put into the silver.
Anyhow I thought this might be nice for people posted away to take a part of thier loved one with them and likewise for the families left at home.
I would like to know what you think of that idea?

If you intend to offer military discount you can also be featured in an online directory that lets forces personnel know of companies interested in offering discounts - let me know if you want details. I am interested in this sort of thing and think it would be a good idea for sevice families as you have rightly identified they have a desire to keep a memento of their children close. you could also contact local army etc camps and ask if they could run an open evening where wives etc bring children. You can make a lot of sales this way (I know a lady who did handpainted pottery) and the hall etc can often be provided free of charge if you offer a commission either direct to the unit welfare fund or to SAAFA, Help for Heroes etc. Lots of young mums esepcailly are stuck at home and living away from extended family so might welcome the chance to have an afternoon/evening out and buy soemthing nice at the same time.

Good luck.

lemonadesparkle · 24/02/2010 19:21

Home Port - produced by NFF

luciemule · 24/02/2010 19:23

I think it's a fab idea. If you have a website, you could always ask BFBS here as they're always looking for interesting stories and people to interview.

Yorky · 24/02/2010 19:26

I have a bracelet with charms on with DS and DDs fingerprints on which I love and am getting bump's fingerprint for my birthday (due late May) Would definitely buy from a military friendly person over just a company website

SignatureSilver · 24/02/2010 19:32

Thank you all so much for your advice and support.
I am deffinately interrested in supporting fubdraising and charities, and would be willing to donate a percentage of any sales I made.
Marriedtoagoodun - can you give me more details about getting listed in an online directory.
Don't know where to start you have all given me great ideas...
If you are interrested in having a nosey at my site its signaturesilver dot co dot uk
thanks again

This is straight from the discount guide:

If you know of any local businesses wanting to offer discount to the MOD please contact Sam on 01604 495495 www.forcesdiscounts-mod.co.uk

Good luck - am going to look your store up now...

luciemule · 24/02/2010 21:46

Can I ask signaturesilver what happens to the kits with the impressions on once they've been moulded (with regards to the fingerprints being kept, security etc)? Hope you don't mind me asking?

SignatureSilver · 25/02/2010 09:41

No of course not. We usually destroy them, but we can return them to the customer when we are finished with them.

To be honest once we have taken the impression there isn't usually much print left. The moulds that we use are not solid so they flatten when pressed into the silver.

If you have any more questions please let me know. Hannah*

Cool thanks - was just a bit worried about someone (not you obviously) getting hold of my fingerprints and then fitting me with mass murder . I think it's such a fab idea though - think you'll get loads of interest from the forces.

SignatureSilver · 26/02/2010 14:52

Hi Again
Sorry I have more questions.
I am really interrested in running an open evening, on camps. I googled last night to try and find address and contact details for local bases, but got a bit lost with it all.
Can you help? I am interrested in bases in North east england and southern scotland.
Where would I find contact details, and who would I ask for?
Also how would I get word around camps that the open evening was on? Someone mentions the radio which I am going to look into, but also I was thinking about posters etc to display in the run up to the event?

Thanks

Okay - so you're best bet would be to contact each HIVE (information centre) in each area.
here

Once you're there, choose the area and find the HIVE for each base you want, Dishforth or Catterick for example. Then I'd ring them as it's quicker but check their open times 'cause they vary and most are only open until afternoon.
You could send them your posters and they will put up on their boards or around camp/in local NAAFI etc. I think. Most camps have a cimmunity centre or building where you would be abe to hold the evening. Think you would have orders coming out of your ears.

luciemule · 26/02/2010 16:17

community rather than cimmunity! I hate people thinking I can't spell!

SignatureSilver · 27/02/2010 13:21

Thanks again, and don't worry about the spelling! your better than me!

Hi ladies
well I have finally made some decision and I am now offering a forces discount, in addition to a donation to help the heros. As I am not allowed to tell you about the details of this on here, please feel free to email me directly and I will fill you in from there [email protected]
Also If anyone would be willing to place a poster or leaflets in your local HIVE etc please let me know directly and I can send you some out.
Thanks again. Hannah*

Hiya Ladies

Well it apears that a competitor of mine has been reading your very helpful ideas, and has attempted to beat me to it, organising an event at your Hives. Not fair play really when its a nationwide franchise, and they don't have any affiliation to the services.
If any of you are based in edinburgh, alnwick, catterick or around york, keep an eye out for us visiting soon.
marrriedtoafgoodun, if you read this could you please email me directly? [email protected]
I would like to pick your brains but might get into trouble on here.
Thanks Hannah*
