Yesterday? "We'll drop a few off Mrs Saltire, so if you want to do any packing yourself then you can" they said on the phone on Friday.

I'd hardly call 100 a few would you.

Well you could fill 3, that would describe a few of 100

hf128219 · 24/01/2010 19:38

They like to do this! Some people are very particular about packing themselves. I always just throw my undies and any other personal bits into a suitcase.

So don't worry!

differentID · 24/01/2010 19:43

better to have too many than too few!

Drusilla · 24/01/2010 19:43

Don't forget they only put about 2 things in each box (plus half a ton of wrapping paper!)

madwomanintheattic · 24/01/2010 19:48

lol. quite normal - i leave them parked against the wall in the dining room until they turn up to move us.

once they came back a couple of days later to collect some empty ones as they had run out somewhere else...

...but once they came to collect the full ones and i hadn't packed any. they did have the day wrong though...

it's just a ploy to get you to do the work really - they get paid the same whether you pack everything or they do. it can pay off for you if you know you're tight on allowance though - or don't want anything broken . they do pack v little in each box and often appallingly badly.

i always ask if there is another company i can opt for lol.

hf128219 · 24/01/2010 20:06

They really don't have a clue sometimes about valuables.

They once shoved oil paintings unwrapped/unprotected into boxes - but wrapped up things like a plastic egg timer

Berryred · 24/01/2010 21:15

heehee

I like to pack myself (currently doing so) and have the pre-move out man coming to assess how much room I'll need! Lets see how many I get left!

Have fun lol

SaltireOShanter · 25/01/2010 08:20

I packed 1 box Don't actually have the physica health to do a lot. I also filled 4 black bags of crap rubbish

OP posts:
flossie64 · 25/01/2010 12:13

Just something to note. Whites gave me loads of boxes ,but if I choose to pack myself , the insurance didn't cover them, but what they packed was covered. Hope that makes sense .
good luck with the move, not long til you escape your loony neighbour.

SaltireOShanter · 25/01/2010 14:48

flossie - I am just doing thing slike personal papers, and boxes of photos. Everything else can be left, I don't really have the inclination (or the energy) to do any more. Am concentrating on crap and junk clearing

madwomanintheattic · 25/01/2010 15:03

they packed our huge serving bowls on their sides in the bottom of the box and then very carefully placed really heavy stuff on top to fill the box. all my huge china bowls were neatly broken in half from the pressure. it's a long time since i did o level physics lol, but even i knew that was a pretty dumb thing to do... they've also lost a box of my books. since last summer. and are still insisting that they'll probably turn up somewhere... although i've got so many books i can't quite put my finger on the ones that are missing... or even if they are mine, or the kids...

FourArms · 25/01/2010 15:19

On our last move they managed to dent nearly every piece of furniture we own. And the insurance paid up.... £5 per dent! They broke the foot off of the fridge, the front of the washing machine and dishwasher... the list was endless.

Thankfully not much of our stuff is irreplaceable, and we have Forces Financial home insurance which includes removals insurance, although make sure you've got enough cover... if for example you've got £10K of cover, but they estimate your house has £100K of stuff, and you make a claim for £100, they'll only pay out £10 as they'll say you're underinsured. We always up ours for a move.

Good luck in your move.

SaltireOShanter · 25/01/2010 16:53

Well apparently my insurance company don't do "goods in transit " cover, so any suggestions people?

OP posts:
FourArms · 25/01/2010 20:52

Forces Financial do, as do the removals company usually. IIRC it's about £100 though (part of the disturbance allowance which is why it's not included in the removals package). Well worth it IMO. We've used it on every move so far. I always find that even with an excess, we still have a claim. We've only ever had one assessor come out to the house and that was on our last claim as we had so many issues - claim totalled over £1K, usually it's around the £150 mark. Just think, this is the only time you could potentially lose everything. If the van has a fire, or the warehouse where it's stored overnight is robbed/burns down, it could be your whole life gone. Scary.

SaltireOShanter · 26/01/2010 07:43

fourarms - do you have the removals company's insurance or the one with your home insurance company?

I have rung 6 different insurance companies and all of them have insurance cover for moving house, mine seems to be the only one who doesn't

Whites did my move from Cornwall to Belgium - only damages were a Le Creuset casserole and we can't find the canteen of cutlery, but I still have unpacked boxes of stuff in the cellar 3 years on (in my defence, I don't need the stuff as much of it is teaching resources and I am not working out here). They were fine and the only thing that annoyed me was the empty cereal box that got packed, and the bottle of olive oil without a top which I was about to chuck and I turned round and it had moved. All my china and glasses were fine.

Scootergrrrl · 26/01/2010 10:40

We once had the packers in to move from Catterick to Warminster and they left an entire kitchen cupboard unpacked and we didn't realise til the annual New Year health kick when we couldn't find the juicer....

FourArms · 27/01/2010 09:26

Saltire - we have cover through our kit and contents insurance with Forces Financial. On our first move we also took out the removals company (Pickfords IIRC) insurance as we didn't realise we already had it. Have had no problems with either route when claiming.

We've had good moves and bad moves, the problem is you just don't know which you'll get. Our last move was negligent. I am not racist or xenophobic, but we had two removals men for a full 3 bed house. They packed and removed in 10 hours. One removals man was Polish and spoke no English. I think the things he packed were the ones that got broken. He tried to move our (v.expensive) heavy 4 seater leather sofa by himself by dragging it up the garden steps. We were always going to have broken stuff. Other moves have had 6 blokes packing and loading over two days, and nothing broken. It's not rocket science to realise if they're short staffed and rushing they're not going to do such a good job.

Saltire · 31/01/2010 16:37

Have jsut worked out that White and Co's cover will cost us £60. Has anyone used it before? Do they do full cover - i.e if lorry gets broken into they will replace everything

Stinkermink · 09/02/2010 20:44

Kit insurance via forces financial.

100 boxes dropped off would be my husbands idea of heaven. He loves packing and unpacking weirdly. And loves to do it himself. Must be the supplier in him. Not to mention the lists and box annotating that has to go with it. I just sit about watching corrie until he eventually packs the telly. Then the removal company moan about how heavy the boxes are....they only stipulate square footage not weight LOL!!

I almost forgot about the stockpile of packing tape he has, last time we moved the removal guys ran out and DH was so pleased that the stash could be used!

StrictlyKatty · 22/02/2010 12:37

Whites 'lost' my DSi, left behind my washbasket and broke 50% of our things! I hate them with a passion!

Get insurance... you'll need it

Drusilla · 22/02/2010 13:29

Whites trashed all our furniture too - enormous scratches over half our furniture. They were the only bad move we have had. Baxters were fab - so good that we wrote a letter to them.

StrictlyKatty · 22/02/2010 16:31

I'm aiming for Pearsons this time, they always look really good. Just please Lord not White or Whittles!
