ADHD whilst serving in BFG

My DS has been diagnosed with ADHD and whilst school have been good, it took us to have him assessed in UK by doing it ourselves.

Has anyone else had their DC diagnosed whilst serving overseas and how did you overcome this. In the main, i am trying to find out how others coped with schooling, postings and anything else that you may have encountered.

Thank you.

Hi Cheeky,

Not quite the same but dd2 has mild cp so we go through the postings drama etc. Have you spoken to CEAS at Upavon yet? They are really useful if you have specific quetions and especially about BFG and UK - less so for anywhere more exotic.
DD2 is statemented, and we've moved twice (third pending this summer, but still in doubt because in her sn, despite a posting order lol), so if you need any advice, happy to offer it lol!
Essentially, I do it all myself - as soon as I find out where we are posted, I start calling. I contact LEA if UK or CEAS and local unit if o'seas. I find out where the quarters are, and which school is likely - I call the school and arrange to visit the school... I call the Area IncO, I find out what the health authority is, I call the secretary of the local community paed, I ask for names and addresses of all the people we need referrals to (currently a list of various therapists/ eye specs etc lol) and I get our existing team to write referral letters to all the 'new' team well in advance of arrival date. My best ever response was having a paed appointment booked three months before we moved lol (for 3 days after we arrived)... It does pay to be organised....
Anyway - I could go on for hours, but will rein myself in - if you want to know anything specific, ask away!

I am really interested in this, as i am hoping to join my DH in BFG, when he returns from tour.

My DD2 has special needs, brain tumour, with a cyst that requires twice a week draining. She also has very little vision and we are in the process of getting a statement (fingers crossed) as she is showing signs of short term memory loss from radiotherapy which is affecting her learning.

Are we saying that they dont really cater for special needs over there ??

What happens if they cant ?? Are you just expected to live apart ???

Him in BFG and me here ????

hi lydle - we spoke before i think

did you ever contact the SMO at the med centre where your dh is? they would be able to give you all the info you needed. as i said before though, if they couldn't cope with the med side, your dh could approach his CO or desk officer for a UK move. it happens all the time, and even with people who are part of a unit, there are always other jobs available that are UK based...

Thanks madwomanintheattic,

Havent done anything yet, waiting for DH to get back from tour (may) then we start with plans. Thought that would be easier.

Statement forms due to be sent soon, and no real news medically, she had some treatment at the Royal Marsden, but early signs didnt work

In your experience, what do you think they will say ???

I would really like to go, new start and all that !!

i can't remember whre you're going, was it bielefeld ish?

the german medical side is very impressive, and i doubt there would be any 'technical' reason you couldn't go - did you speak to CEAS at upavon about the statement etc? the SCE schools are well versed in looking at statements (it acts like another LEA) and the team will know if her educational needs can be met - i think i remember from our convo before that her ed needs weren't enormous and the ed side shouldn't be an issue - i think it's more getting the SMO at the med centre on side... once that is sorted the battle is practically won - you just need to make sure you have all the up to date reports an an exact list of what is required. The SMO will probably have to take it off to the german net to investigate how it would be managed (and whether they would be paying for it lol) but we're all EU now, eh?!

(i don't know if you've read my other thread lol - we're currently having a drama with an o'seas posting because of dd2 - for the first time - everything else has always worked perfectly, grr.!)

good luck!

Today, we got a phonecall from the head of school to say that our DS had been throwing chairs during PE. It then transpired that a few days ago during snack time, the other children had to leave the class room due to him having a tantrum. We only found out that he s kicking other children too.

After a brief conversation with the Head, they are on the verge of expelling him. Now he is no angel, but to go from changing his class and us thinking that all is going ok (ish) to facing expulsion is a little extreme.

My question to those who may have had experience in this area is, can the school go from changing his class, to facing expulsion?
