DHE and Dogs

We've got two large rottweilers. I am aware that they can look menacing to some people, and know that their sheer size is intimidating to some, especially combined with the reputation that the breed has.

But, they are well trained, obedient dogs, and neither have ever shown serious aggression to another dog or person.

Today I have had a rep from DHE round to the house to advise me that someone has complained about my dogs 'attacking' her dog. The incident, if you can even call it that, occurred a few weeks ago. I was walking the dogs, and saw family approaching. I stopped, and made my dogs sit because the two children wanted to stroke them. In my experience, parents tend to be happier about children approaching rotties if they are sat nicely. All smiles, so we started on our way. Woman in the family was walking a smaller dog on the lead-it growled when my dogs went in for a sniff, and there was some general dog headbutting. Nothing serious as far as I could see, but she reacted by shouting 'Jesus!' as I pulled my dogs away and started on my way again.

I can see how she might have thought that they could turn, but to report us for 'attacking' her is ridiculous. A rottweiler attack would be very serious, and not something that would need to be investigated, as it would be obvious that an attack had taken place.

The lady from DHE spent twenty minutes with the dogs and told me that she agreed that the complaint was stupid, but I am still a bit that it was taken this far. Does anyone have any experience of what they could actually do. I have been assured that they won't remove permission to keep them, but it concerns me that they could in the future. I have to stress that they are very well behaved, but people have expressed concern about them, just because they are rottweilers. Am I being over sensitive?

I can see your point but I think if someone has complained to DE they should investigate it, which is what they've done. I know they can refuse you permission to keep them but FWIW I've never actually seen them do that (and have seen some bloody awful dogs in MQs!) Like you say, if your dogs did attack something or someone it would be obvious, so if they haven't actually done anything you'll be OK.

Hiya,
I am sure if there has been no evidence of
an attack then they wont tell ou that you can't keep them.

Dont think your bein over sensitive but i can
see why DHE had to investigate.

I am sure you'll be ok hun.

I think the person prob knows it wasnt really an attack, if she was that concerned surely she would have involved the police/dog warden, to just go to DHE rather than a higher authority shows this.

At least the woman from DHE seemed very level headed.

The other dog owner actually went to the police first. They know our dogs, so dismissed it as ridiculous and handed it to DHE.

Thanks for your answers. I'm grateful that DHE were sensible about it, I think I am just a bit about the other dog owner's reaction, and wonder if she would have been the same if my dogs had been labs or something similar.

I have a GSD and live in quarters, he's a big bugger but soft as butter. I've had a few comments about why I don't walk him on the lead, but tbh I'd like to see them try walking a 45kg hound on a lead, he's much better without and I always bring one with me. Good on DHE for being sensible, shame about the other owners reaction. FWIW I regularly walk the boy with my friend and her dog (lab) and the only poos we see all over the patch are small dog poos, that is much more offensive.
Perhaps she would have been more receptive if they had been labs, but they are less disciplined at times and very enthousiatic which could be contrued differently.
