Becoming a forces wife

Hello

What would you tell someone about becoming a forces wife (specifically RAF)? I'm looking for someone to dish the dirt on accommodation or problems, explain how living on bases works - do you have your own furniture, can you keep pets and a garden? Is it like living in a goldfish bowl all the time or like a big happy community?

As a wife, can you work and/or study or is it not worth the hassle as you're likely to be moved regularly? And how regularly do you get moved usually?

Basically I'm finding it really hard to get information on what life as a RAF wife is really like and it's something I feel I need to know before my life possibly moves in that direction. Any advice much appreciated.

They'd think I was a nutter surely sunnytimer? I do have a daughter, she's 2.
It's all in ver very early stages of considering but I have to be able to picure every aspect of something to make decisions, I'm a bit obsessed with having all the information in advance

Hi I'm an RAF wife and new to MN. I know this is a fairly old thread but thought I'd add my two-pence worth.

It depends which trade your DH is in as to how often you'll move around, we move every two years or so, but currently living in a place where people are very rarely posted because it's very trade specific. Beautiful area but isolated and can;t wait for DH's next posting to move somewhere near civilisation.

Also depends on DH rank as to what type of MQ you will be entitled to. As for career, well teaching is a very portable job once your trained! Many wives I know work but most of them are teachers, nurses, or secretaries. Jobs that you can carry with you round the country and make your CV look exciting.

Pets, we have a dog and a cat. AS long as you steam clean carpets before you march out it's fine.

Good luck

I'm ex-Navy myself, and have been a Navy wife for nearly 12 years. We have our own house and have never lived in a MQ so I know we are quite unusual (luckily DH has always been in base port). My life is very different to most of the Forces Wives on here as we don't live on a base or camp, so really I live a "normal" life except for DH going away a lot!

I work, have 3 children and am nowhere near my family (which is an advantage for me ) so have become very self-sufficient and have some very special friends, most of whom are Navy/ex Navy too.
