I would like to send nice things to our soldiers, anyone know how?

Having been a lurker for a while, I've read many of the different topic lists, even chicken keepers (although I have to admit it hasn't encouraged a love of chicken's in me!)

I have read a few times how much the soldiers appreciate nice things being sent out to them and I would like a few thing out.

Would this be appropriate, if so how do I do this and what should I send

Thanks for that KerryK, its really helpful to get lists from people that have sent things over

When DH was away on exercise he absolutely loved food in his parcels. Even with exercise (not front line) their rations are meagre which is appalling, imo.

Tins of fruit - brilliant idea - get ones with pull-ring can tops tho - cos might not have decent tin opener but then they tend to carry Swiss Army knives on them so probably get the tins open eventually. Tins of fruit act as food as well as a lovely drink.

Grab a few of those little pots of milk - y'know the long life variety - you can get in Tescos cafe...they're in tough little pots and ideal for a cuppa esp if you're sending out t-bags or coffee sachets. You can even get them in tubes made of tough plastic now. DH said they had to make up their own milk using dried milk powder. Never quite the same with a cuppa.

hughjarssss · 26/07/2008 13:43

Fantastic idea's.

Looks like i'll be making a trip to tesco!

hughjarssss · 26/07/2008 14:35

I found the UHT tubes, can only buy them in packs of 200 though! Might get them anyway and then put some up to do another box with

whispywhisp · 26/07/2008 14:49

Can't you just have a few more than you actually need for your next cuppa in Tescos? It's ok...I won't tell Mr Tesco..I promise!

whispywhisp · 26/07/2008 14:51

And whilst you're at it grab a few sachets of salt, vinegar, ketchup, mayo...all very useful to tart up their bland boring meals!

hughjarssss · 26/07/2008 14:53

Fab idea!

I know where me and dd will be having lunch on Monday!

whispywhisp · 26/07/2008 14:55

Which Tescos will it be? I will get their CCTV homed in on you! ha ha!

whispywhisp · 26/07/2008 14:56

BTW I think you're doing a brilliant job with this box idea. It shows that you really do want to put together a great box and you're really trying your hardest to get the bits you've thought of and what people have suggested. Excellent work! When you've done your box you can do another one and send it to me! Thank you!!! xx

hughjarssss · 26/07/2008 15:36

Thank you Wispy.

I do want to make a goood box, I want the person that opens it to be pleased with whats in there, so she knows we are thinking of them over there.

hughjarssss · 26/07/2008 15:37

If you spot someone in Tesco's cafe with bulging pockets, that'll be me!

TinkerBellesMum · 26/07/2008 15:45

This thread has got me thinking, I've spoken to TBD (who's in London for the weekend) and he said we'll look into it when he gets back. I'm also thinking about doing it as an organised activity from the Resident's Association I'm setting up. I think that it doesn't matter what you think of the war, it's not these guys and girls fault. (Personally I've not really come down on either side on that debate, but if I'm organising an activity for it, other peoples views are something I may need to think about)

hughjarssss · 26/07/2008 15:50

I agree Tinker, whether you support the war or not you still have to support the servicemen and women that are over.

whispywhisp · 26/07/2008 16:00

I will make sure I bodily search everyone in every Tesco cafe on Monday! Whether they be bulging pockets or any other bulges I will search them!

hughjarssss · 26/07/2008 18:18

Now who's being kinky!

whispywhisp · 26/07/2008 18:32

Sorry...naughty me..tut tut.....!!

hughjarssss · 26/07/2008 18:34
Grin
whispywhisp · 26/07/2008 18:36

I'm a 40yr old Mum of two children. I really should know better. But I don't!

whispywhisp · 26/07/2008 18:39

hugh...you should come to here where we have a great laugh with lots of lovely, funny, witty MNetters....we talk about absolutely anything and everything and try to have a giggle about most things. You'd be made very welcome.xxxx

Along with anyone else?!!

whispywhisp · 29/07/2008 11:29

Hiya Hugh..hows the box going? Did you raid Tescos cafe yesterday for sugar, coffee, milk etc?x

hughjarssss · 29/07/2008 13:57

Box is going well, didn't need to ransck Tesco's in the end, dp has 'borrowed' milk, ketchup, mayonaise, sugar and tea bags from his works canteen. He's doing a little bit each day and its building up quite nicely!

So far I have also brought

Pack of cards
hand sanitizer
Lip balm with SPF
wet wipes

I was going to get socks but wasn't sure if they had to be a particular colour?
I has some ideas whispy that I wouldn't mind your opinion on;

A mini hand held fan
A little grooming kit: nail scissors, tweezers
nail file, small mirror
Home made biscuits/ fruit cake - which ever is easiet for a beginner to make!

whispywhisp · 29/07/2008 14:18

All those suggestions are great Hugh. Not sure about the scissors part tho cos of security etc...cos I'm guessing the parcels get scanned? I don't know...I'll ask DH when he gets home tonight.

whispywhisp · 29/07/2008 23:51

Hugh...before I go thought I'd just let you know that I asked DH about the scissors...he said probably not a good idea cos your parcel may well get x-rayed for security and anything metal will show up and it'd be a shame to get your parcel opened up to have items removed. xxx

hughjarssss · 30/07/2008 00:47

Thanks whispy

hughjarssss · 30/07/2008 11:58
