I am rubbish with interiors. Having never had a choice I have never really paid much attention. So what colours would be good to choose. I am thinking green?? What shade is best to mask marks and easy to clean? And what about the kitchen?
What have you in your quarter and is it nice? We currently have a very stained beigey brown downstairs, stairs and landing and light green in the bedrooms.
TIA....

Hi VanillaPumpkin - we meet again!

Difficult to say with colours. I'm not sure what's on offer at the moment. We often end up with a lightish green, which is OK except that until recently we had green sofas! An unobjectionable shade of pink seems to appear often upstairs. It would be nice to have the whole house the same but we've never managed that. Not sure if the colours offered for upstairs are different from downstairs as, I guess, the quality will be different.

Sorry not to be more help - enjoy choosing!

crumpet · 06/05/2008 12:52

Digestive biscuit is a good colour - hides a multitude of sins and goes with anything

Lukesmammy · 06/05/2008 15:17

I second the digestive biscuit colour - we had that in our last quarter and went with everything. Now in my new quarter and have crappy pink/purpley stuff in the living room and dining room followed by a mauvey colour everywhere else - awful.

How did you manage to get new carpets by the way? I am currently onto MOD HS as mine are falling to bits and I caught my DS (1 year old) with a piece in his mouth the other day.

kerryk · 06/05/2008 16:13

i managed to get a new living room carpet by moaning like mad about my old one, in the end they gave me it to shut me up.

my argument was that the people befor me had dogs and the carpets were stinking and stained, we have our own carpet cleaner and it made to difference.

the y replaced the horrible green (that went with nothing) to a lovely beige/brown.

VanillaPumpkin · 06/05/2008 16:24

That digestive biscuit is what we have downstairs and does seem a good neutral that will suit future residents too. I certainly don't object to the colour just the bleach stain and burn hole and terrible marks all over it .
I am hoping I will get the replacements approved because they are out of date and because of the standard of them alone they should have been replaced before we moved in. We said we would wait to see them as we had a dog and a baby but when we arrived they were far worse than we expected and so we requested then for them to be replaced, the bathroom floor in particular (big hair dye stain on floor). Then MHS took over and then the offices were all changing to the HIC's and then they ran out of money etc and I couldn't get a thing done. After 18 mths I finally got the flooring replaced in the bathroom on H&S grounds not because it was stained . Since then my neighbours and three others on this patch (to my knowledge) have had their carpets replaced while muggins here sits about thinking they might be able to do their job and remember my request. You have to make a pain of yourself to get anything done!
My curtains are 14 years old and awful. They have approved those twice but then staff changed and they ran out of money so I have nothing. They actually let me raid bin bags of old curtains as they were better than the ones in my home so the the ones that belong to the quarter are in the garage and the ones I have up do not even fit the windows but are better than what I had......Sorry rant over .
Thanks for advice. Think biscuit is good for everyone and perhaps nice green for bedrooms...

Not beige! It is a developers dream but has been done to death.I have seen a lovely grey carpet that is gorgeous.Green sounds good too

VanillaPumpkin · 06/05/2008 16:44

Oh grey could be nice...My dad has grey in his bedroom and it is lovely. I thought it would be cold but it isn't, it is a nice soft shade.
I think green as long as it isn't that DARK green as that limits things for people...Would be nice to have a change too.
Will update tomorrow if I actually get to choose anything .

I ahve green (with red wine stains and other stains in the dining room, downstairs hall, stairs, and landing, and living room. Then a grey/blue shade in the whole of the upstairs!
At our old MQ we had a really nice navy blue shade throughout the whole of the downstairs, it was great

nell12 · 06/05/2008 21:07

We have the beige in our hall, it may have been done to death, but it matches everything and cleans up a treat with babywipes!

Anything darker than that showed up the dog and cat hairs

VanillaPumpkin · 06/05/2008 21:19

Yes. My friend has the dark blue which I liked but it shows so much. It is quite odd ....

I got them!!!! With apologies sort of!!!
Both the carpets and curtains have been in this house since 1994, and look like it too.
My carpets were even ordered at one point and for some reason given to someone else.
The lady was very lovely and basically had already approved everything (rightly) based on the notes in her file. They will take approx 3 mths but I am thrilled. I am not getting a new kitchen floor but at least I don't need to worry about that on march out.
I have chosen a pinky blue for upstairs. Like a warm blue(!). And then a pale green for the rest as I wanted a change from the biscuit. Plus the biscuit seemed much darker than what I have, more of a brown which I didn't like. Woo hoo!
Hope the colours are neutral without being too boring? At least they won't clash with any of your furniture .

Congratulations!

Of course, your husband is bound to get posted within the next 3 months so you never see your new carpets.....................

VanillaPumpkin · 07/05/2008 15:26

Hahahahahahahahaha .
He had better bloody not .

Do you think the colours sound OK then??

benandalex · 07/05/2008 15:27

get the darkest ones possible godsend come march out we have brnad new peach carpets and im forever cleaning them

VanillaPumpkin · 07/05/2008 15:31

Oh the peach is an awful colour for someone to choose .
Oddly the really dark blue and green show marks too though. My friend had brand new dark blue ones and they do not look good now. The lady who came said they fade fast too.....

The colours sound lovely. Make the most of it and enjoy!

My most recent triumph was persuading them to give us a new bath and retile the bathroom. It was a lot of work, both getting it approved and putting up with workmen starting the job and being called away over a two week period in December but I LOVE MY NEW BATH!

VanillaPumpkin · 07/05/2008 15:43

. It does make a difference doesn't it? We had a repaint whilst in Cyprus and it was like a new bungalow .
I do need my bath resealed now.......might make that my next mission....would MHS do that??

OP posts:
MotherOfGirls · 07/05/2008 17:47

I had to get a DE man to survey my bathroom and approve the new bath before MHS would bring one but resealing a bath should definitely be an MHS thing. Good luck!

glucose · 09/05/2008 20:10

We have just had our done. The DHE lady suggested 'oatmeal' its a lovely light golden brown, very neutral. In the bedrooms we chose blue its midblue and all looks very nice. We have waited a year since intial approval though.

VanillaPumpkin · 09/05/2008 20:13

I liked the Oatmeal but felt it was just a bit too light to cope with potential dog/child mud...
If you look closely at your blue does it have pink flecks? If so that is what we have ordered for upstairs.... I have been told to call in Aug if I have not heard anything. A year is a long time to wait.

bit late sorry! hope you like your new carpets lol at the fact someone said you'll move before they come that happened to me at RAF kinloss

I like the red colour myself as it shows off my dark furniture well and hids the red wine stains

VanillaPumpkin · 16/05/2008 09:44

. I like the red too but have a terracotta sofa. Can you imagine? Eeek.
A fair number of people here have told me I am guaranteed a posting now too . I hope not. I want at least 12 months worth of new carpets first!
